Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

You're describing how rational school boards should behave and many do just that. However, many other ones have been captured by christofascist assholes like school board chair Barney Bishop, a real life dinosaur. They then heed the creepy fringe parents, not the majority....

Tallahassee Classical is part of the Leon County School District, but District governance looks to be pretty hands off.

Its new Interim Headmaster is a Liberty "University" grad and is "active in a local church."
Its Director of Operations and Food Services Director homeschooled their children.
It has a Discipline Coordinator who is also a Children’s Pastor.
Its Facilities Manager is an Alabama football fan, Roll Tide.
https://tlhclassical.org/administration/

It's pretty clear that Florida and Leon County taxpayers are funding an xtian madrassa.
An excellent reason to accept that Jeb bush is evil and if ever elected president, this would be the law of the land.

The Tallahassee Classical School is affiliated with Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian institution that has sought to expand its influence over the last decade by helping set up public charter schools. Hillsdale briefly cut ties with the Tallahassee school in early 2022 for not meeting improvement standards, but it later regained affiliation.

"Hillsdale has raised funds for the charter school network by pledging to fight “leftist” and “distorted” teaching of American history, such as the lessons about slavery contained in The New York Times’ 1619 Project, the newspaper reported last year.

More and more christians have become a hate group.
Is the David porn? Come see, Italians tell Florida parents

The Florence museum housing Michelangelo’s Renaissance masterpiece the David on Sunday invited parents and students from a Florida charter school to visit after complaints about a lesson featuring the statue forced the principal to resign.

Florence Mayor Dario Nardella also tweeted an invitation for the principal to visit so he can personally honor her. Confusing art with pornography was “ridiculous,” Nardella said....
:---P
The incredulous Italian response highlighted how the U.S. culture wars are often perceived in Europe, where despite a rise in right-wing sentiment and governance, the Renaissance and its masterpieces, even its naked ones, are generally free of controversy. Sunday's front page of the Italian daily publication Corriere della Sera featured a cartoon by its leading satirist depicting David with his genitals covered by an image of Uncle Sam and the word “Shame.”

... Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Galleria dell'Accademia, where the David resides, expressed astonishment at the controversy.

"To think that David could be pornographic means truly not understanding the contents of the Bible, not understanding Western culture and not understanding Renaissance art,” Hollberg said in a telephone interview.

She invited the principal, school board, parents and student body to view the “purity” of the statue....

Marla Stone, head of humanities studies at the American Academy in Rome, said the Florida incident was another episode in escalating U.S. culture wars and questioned how the statue could be considered so controversial as to warrant a prior warning.

“What we have here is a moral crusade against the body, sexuality, and gender expression and an ignorance of history,” Stone said in an email. “The incident is about fear, fear of beauty, of difference, and of the possibilities embedded in art.” ...
Christofascist Tallahassee Classical School and Hillsdale College embarrass not just themselves but also Florida and America.

Wisconsin elementary "school" won't let its first graders sing this because it's "controversial." Yep.
Living in a Rainbowland
Where everything goes as planned
And I smile
'Cause I know if we try, we could really make a difference in this world
I won't give up, I'll sleep a wink
It's the only thought I think, you know where I stand
I believe we can start living in a Rainbowland
Living in a Rainbowland
Where you and I go hand in hand
Oh, I'd be lying if I said this was fine
All the hurt and the hate going on here
We are rainbows, me and you
Every color, every hue
Let's shine on through
Together, we can start living in a Rainbowland
Living in a Rainbowland
The skies are blue and things are grand
Wouldn't it be nice to live in paradise
Where we're free to be exactly who we are
Let's all dig down deep inside
Brush the judgment and fear aside
Make wrong things right
And end the fight
'Cause I promise ain't nobody gonna win (come on)

A really really super smart Florida charter school principal fell for a phone scammer pretending to be Elon Musk with a Nigerian accent. It appears that the really smart principal, after talking with this fake Elon for months, determined that if she would only send Elon a measly $100,000 from school funds that Elon would invest millions and millions, perhaps even billions, in her school. A sort of Win! Win!! on steroids.

Some slight liberties were employed in my description of the specific events; however, my overall description of the idiot principal is spot on.

:D Speaking of charter schools, unscientific MSN poll underneath an article about TX Gov Abbott speaking on "school choice".

To what extent do you support or oppose school choice programs?
Strongly oppose 58%
Strongly support 23%
Somewhat support 8%
Somewhat oppose 7%
Other / No opinion 3%

65% opposition is heartening despite the bias in the question not mentioning that "school choice" means defunding public schools. I clicked "Strongly oppose".

Giving free money to lower economic people so they can send their kids to private schools seems like one of the least Republican things I can think of. Right up there with piling unnecessary regulations and tax on to your state's biggest economic engine.

Other than the school scheme, is there anything else at all where a citizen can opt out of paying for a public service because they aren't using it? Toll roads don't count because they're a specific user fee. You can't get a refund for not having your house burn down.

Parks and other recreation or exploitation of federal resources are partially funded by user fees. So, I guess non-users have opted out. But, your point is valid.

One reason our democracy and public life is so fucked up - Shrub:
U.S. History Scores Are Falling, but It’s Not Just Because of the Pandemic

... Since the implementation of No Child Left Behind in the early 2000s and its update during the Obama administration, federal policy has required states to test students in reading and math. Periodic testing is also required for science.

No such mandate exists for social studies. (Many state policies around testing and accountability also do not include social studies.)

While some experts have criticized standardized tests as limited in effectiveness and detrimental to students, most generally agree: What is tested drives what is taught.

Instructional time for social studies declined after the implementation of No Child Left Behind, a pattern that was amplified during the pandemic, when schools had to triage academic losses, resulting in more of a focus on reading and math.

“It doesn’t bode well for the future of this country and for the future of democracy if we don’t start doing more instruction in social studies,” said Kristin Dutcher Mann, a history professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, who helps train middle and high school social studies teachers. At one point, she said, older elementary school students in her community received an hour of social studies each day. Now, she said, “they will be lucky if they get 30 minutes for social studies twice a week.” ...
No wonder there's so much ignorance of History and Civil Rights (even before the anti-CRT stupidity), Civics, Geography, etc.

Sigh.

MAGA Colorado: Hold our beers.
A Colorado school board was taken over by Trump-loving conservatives. Now nearly half its high school teachers are bailing.

... A group of conservatives won control of Woodland Park, Colorado's school district at the end of 2021.

Since then, they've enacted a number of far-right policies that have infuriated many teachers, residents, and even staunch Republicans in the small town of just 8,000 people, according to a new report from NBC News.

Nearly 40% of the district's high school teachers have decided to leave at the end of this school year, a district administrator told NBC News.

And at least 4 higher-ups in the district have quit over the new board's policies, according to interviews and emails viewed by NBC News....

Among its most controversial new policies was the board's decision to adopt the American Birthright social studies standard. The curriculum standard, created by a right-wing advocacy group, emphasizes patriotism, discourages civic engagement, and criticizes the federal government's control of public schools, NBC News reported.

The board also pushed against mental health resources for students ...

... Unions that ally with Democrats, including those representing teachers and health care workers, face strict new requirements under the measure.

Public sector unions which usually endorse, contribute and work in the campaigns of Florida Republicans — correctional officers, law enforcement, firefighters, and other first responders — are exempt from the new requirements....

A group of concerned parents say they just want to look out for kids, but critics say they push a darker agenda.

... Critics, however, see the group as a right-wing effort to indoctrinate students and censor what they learn....

Marisa Fuentes, a historian and associate professor of women’s and gender studies at Rutgers University who spoke to Yahoo News, goes further, contending that Moms for Liberty is dedicated to promoting white supremacy.

“It is the students of color who are the ones who really need to be protected from the centuries of racist education that gaslighted their histories and experiences and now are again being completely displaced by the parents of white children," she said. "The language of ‘protection of children’ is code for ‘White children should not be made to know how they benefit from centuries of violence, theft of land and slavery.’” ...

Now it's "super smart Florida" public school management, too. Fascist DerSantis strikes again:
Florida teacher under investigation after showing Disney movie Strange World to fifth-grade class

... The movie features an openly gay character named Ethan and explores a romantic side plot between Ethan and his crush, Diazo.

... The law prohibits classroom discussions related to gender and sexuality and has been expanded to encompass all grades in the state. Activists have criticized the legislation for its vagueness, suggesting that virtually anything could be perceived as a breach, potentially causing teachers to censor themselves and effectively suppress important conversations....
 If the romantic side plot was between Ethan and Diana no one would have batted an eye even though it's equally a discussion "related to gender and sexuality".

Your really super smart Escambia County:
Penguin Random House and Florida parents sue school district over book bans

Penguin Random House, authors, parents and a free speech group filed a lawsuit Wednesday against a Florida school district for removing 10 books related to race and the LGBTQ community after a high school teacher complained.
:angry-cussing: Shame on her.
... “This is no accident,” the suit alleged. “The clear agenda behind the campaign to remove the books is to categorically remove all discussion of racial discrimination or LGBTQ issues from public school libraries. Government action may not be premised on such discriminatory motivations.”

Neither the district nor the school board immediately responded to requests for comment. However, Bill Slayton, a member of the school board, told NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton that he was surprised by the lawsuit because the school board and the superintendent have been following state law.

"We have been removing books that have been called inappropriate, pornography," he said. "I guess I'm a little surprised because this is going on all over the state of Florida, not just here. My reaction is our procedures are following what we have been told we have to do."
Cowards.
The plaintiffs allege a campaign to restrict access to books in the Escambia County School District began last May after Vicki Baggett, a language arts teacher at the district’s Northview High School, challenged “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” by Stephen Chbosky. Baggett expanded her effort in the fall and challenged more than 100 books for “questionable content,” prompting a book purge in the district, according to the Pensacola News Journal.
Asshole.

Florida English teacher pushing book bans is openly racist and homophobic, students allege

Figures, but the Escambia County School District loves her.

Back to the lawsuit article:
... The other removed or indefinitely restricted books include “Slaughterhouse-Five” by Kurt Vonnegut, “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, “Milo Imagines the World” by Matt de la Peña, “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison and “Push” by Sapphire. More than 100 other titles are restricted and require parental approval for access.
:angry-cussing: I absorbed Vonnegut as a teen.
... In its latest annual book censorship report, the American Library Association documented 1,269 challenges to more than 2,500 books last year, the highest number of attempted book bans since it began tracking such efforts in 2001. Of the 13 books that made its list of most challenged books last year, seven titles — including three of the top four — were challenged for having LGBTQ content, it found.
