Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

... Speaking of DerSantis pandering at the expense of FL kids, though this is sadly true in other right-wing states:
Schools Block Donated Dictionaries Amid Ron DeSantis' Book Crackdown
The holdup comes as a huge number of donated books and purchases are frozen by Florida's new education restrictions.

The definition of “woke” literature from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has apparently grown so expansive that a public school district is now blocking a donation of dictionaries.

Hundreds of dictionaries planned for distribution by a local Rotary Club are gathering dust as the Sarasota County School District awaits guidance from Florida’s Department of Education on how to proceed in light of an education law recently signed by the Republican governor, The Sarasota-Herald Tribune reported Friday.

All book donations and purchases have been halted in the district for the rest of the year because the new law (HB 1467) requires books to be approved for suitability by state-certified media specialists, a job that doesn’t currently exist in the district....
Fuehrer DerSantis and his Brown Shirts must approve approve uff vot your kinder read, even books donated by that seething hotbed uff vokeness, the Rotary Club.

Maybe DerSantis hasn't done anything to justify legal impeachment or recall or whatever might be possible in the dictatorship formerly known as the state of Florida, but clearly he has trashed a lot of things that most garden-variety mainstream middle of the road Floridians would support. Is it possible that a majority of Florida voters really think his ummm "education" approach is good? And how much local misery are voters willing to put up with just so DerSantis can cultivate his out-trumping Trump national persona? If he gets re-elected, then sadly they deserve what they get. C'mon, billy.p - California is calling.

The last rational person to leave Florida shouldn't bother to turn out the lights - just kick dirt into the grave.
The Gov race may be lost, but in a sane America DerSantis MIGHT have cancelled his national aspirations. Of course, 'sane America' is a huge assumption.

they are going to burn all those books because they say dict.. can't have that in the floribama schools.
The dictionaries have the word "gay", and not just the 1940s definition! Horrors!
Florida and everyone in it needs to be sold back to Spain.

Sad story - used to be you could read the US News/World Report rankings of US public schools and Florida always had some with high rankings. Miami-Dade would have a couple, and often somebody in Tampa area and Orlando would be there. Hell, Jacksonville - not normally known for an elite intellectual area - had two in the top 10 in US. Now, the only one anywhere close to the top is School for Advanced Studies in the Miami-Dade system. Who knows what happened - cuts in funding, administrative incompetence, changes in school district organization or priorities? Could be anything. Or it could be Republicans.

2022 Best U.S. High Schools

https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/se ... ype=public)

#24 in National Rankings
North Carolina
The Early College at Guilford
Greensboro, NC
Guilford County Schools

#1 in North Carolina Rankings

Opps. Idk about the U.S. News & World Report rankings, but NC schools were the envy of the nation before the Repugs took over.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
Alexandria, VA
Fairfax County Public Schools

#1 in National Rankings
Suburban DC, not a surprise to me.

California

B-CC
All Rankings
#491 in National Rankings
#8 in Maryland High Schools
#17 in Washington, DC Metro Area High Schools
#5 in Montgomery County Public Schools High Schools

A sharp drop from past rankings from 10 or so years ago.
Most of the top top schools are magnet, which is not surprising, but taking the magnets out, MD used to have good schools, as did NC. It was within our lifetimes that at least one NC governor got elected as the "education and roads" guy.

Looks to me like Maryland might have fewer magnet, charter & STEM schools or they're not as good relative to traditional schools as elsewhere. The filters one chooses can have a significant impact. Oh wait, Walt Whitman is a STEM school now:

This is the high school I graduated from in 72. I wasn't able to find rankings from that time, but this is what they say about it now. If I recall correctly, the school has traditionally had a pretty high ranking within the state.

Yeah, the rankings I posted are all modern. IIRC my school was #1 in the nation when I was there, stomping even VA and SC schools, the now STEM Walt Whitman and O Really's B-CC . . . or that's :bs: and I have no clue, -0-? .

In high school, I was a lazy student. I never had to study; just going to class would usually afford me the ability to pass with C grades. It wasn't until I went to college that I had to actually work at it. But I mostly got A's and B's after high school and made Dean's list more than once and President's list once.

From a young age I was pretty rotten at applying myself to school, though like you I was mostly able to coast. I sailed through nursing school, which I attribute to both nursing and to 30 year old maturity.

Johnson got merged with Woodard in the 80's didn't it? Maybe that's when it took a dip.
Before your time, and thus we won't hold you responsible, but Cal Thomas was a fellow alumni. How he got so warped I don't know. He also attended American University (where my mum was attending when the war broke out). Hanging out with bad people, I guess.

I attended Charles W. Woodward High School, too. Neither really recovered after I was there.

Vrede's classmate from another year:
Class of 1960. They fumigated afterwards. Even then, people knew.

Lots of notable alumni, not so surprising for wealthy, privileged White, DC suburban schools. Walter Johnson High School has more because it's 10 years older and was always the larger school.

Charles W. Woodward
"Demolition of the old building commenced at the end of February, 2021." :(

Lisa Nowak — astronaut (class of 1981). "She flew in space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-121 mission in July 2006, when she was responsible for operating the robotic arms of the shuttle and the International Space Station."

Image

Impressive, but Nowak was passed over for a next mission because she was not "a team player". However, Nowak is most famous for driving from TX to FL wearing a diaper so she wouldn't have to stop and assaulting a romantic rival. "She was sentenced to a year's probation and the two days already served in jail, with no additional jail time."
Hey, if you're going to do crazy . . . I think Woodward's motto was Go Big or Go Home.

Daniel Snyder — owner of the Washington Football Team (class of 1982). :puke-left: I apologize.

Walter Johnson

Nils Lofgren – rock musician (class of 1969 - did not graduate)

Anita Dunn – advisor to President Barack Obama (class of 1976). A year behind me. I inspired the druggie (nttawwt) slacker to care about politics.

Here's one for you: Colleen Haskell – actress and 1st season contestant of reality TV show Survivor (class of 1994). I remember her, from the show. 6th place, winner Richard Hatch. What a cutie! - Colleen, I mean. ;)

Image

Here's my favorite: James Risen – Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and author (class of 1973). A little older than me, but I clued him in to the evils of Big Brother. "Risen won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his stories about President George W. Bush's warrantless wiretapping program," Stellar Wind. This was years before Edward Snowden. The fucking NYT spiked the story for 2 years "at the request of the White House" until Risen wrote a book about it that forced their hand. I'll bet the NYT brags about the Pulitzer now.

Let's look at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

David Boren, U.S. Senator and Governor of Oklahoma; President of University of Oklahoma (class of 1959). Did you cross paths? Oklahoma had Dem pols from the 1970s to the 90s? :headscratch:

Peter Navarro, Director of Dolt .45's National Trade Council (class of 1967). A bigger LOSER than Cal Thomas?

David Simon, creator and executive producer of HBO series The Wire (class of 1978). :-||

Tommy Davidson, comedian, cast member of TV series In Living Color (class of 1981)

Jonathan I. Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems (class of 1983)

Chet Culver (D), Governor of Iowa, 2007-2011 (class of 1984)

Media and journalism, and Books - a bunch

A few federal judges. Guess you are a slacker. :P

I think B-CC and you win.

Yeah, the high school was established shortly after my hometown was incorporated in 1917. And one of the guys in my graduating class, who was on the football team, later returned to the high school as head football coach for about 25 years. He just retired a couple of years ago; there was a big write up about him in the local paper at the time.
