1994 is a surprise given the global star that Mike Myers (1989) became. 1981 is a looong time.

New South Carolina license plates being issued


I'm not opposed to a new design, but goddamn that is an ugly plate. IMO the current plate is the best we've had and one of the best of any state plates. The new plate looks like it was designed with MSPaint back in 1997

They couldn't have come up with something better?

Yeah, that's ugly, and of questionable accuracy. But then your perspective is from a state whose plate has remained essentially unchanged for well over half a century, Garden Stater.

Edit: I looked at the SC gallery, and dang - they're all ugly. That's a shame - keep your as long as you can.

Not to lean too heavily into the stereotype of SC, but:

* Jasper heroically braved fire in the open, but all he did is raise a flag that had been shot down. It wasn't raised over captured territory ala Iwo Jima.

* The British weren't defeated at the Battle of Fort Sullivan, they were merely repelled.

* Not to diminish the numerous battles and skirmishes fought in SC, but it's weird to claim "the Revolutionary War Was Won" there or to focus on Charleston. In the, 1780 Siege of Charleston the rebels suffered "one of the worst American defeats of the war."

... This ended the power of an American army in the South. The defeat was a serious blow to the American cause. It was the largest surrender of an American force under arms until the 1862 surrender of Union troops at Harper's Ferry during the Antietam Campaign. The surrender left no substantial army in the South, and the colonies were wide open for a British advance. The British troops consolidated their hold, and had driven the remaining Continental Army troops from South Carolina consequent to the May 29 Battle of Waxhaws.

* The Revolutionary War wasn't "Won" until Washington and the Continental Army's decisive victory in the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia in 1781, and wasn't finalized until the 1783 Treaty of Paris.

Driving around with that plate is a glaring invitation for strangers to correct the record.

There are a lot of talented designers in the country, and it shouldn't cost much different to offer attractive plates instead of ugly, so I have no idea why states would offer ugly ones.

Have you seen the original series?

Yes, including when it was shown not all that long before the new one came out. But it took only one or two episodes to adjust to the new actors in the roles. They picked them very well. Mrs. Hall got younger, but otherwise no real difference. Here's the original characters..

Poor timing, spoiler-wise. Not only did they just show the rerun with the Repulse sinking and Mrs. Hall getting the call from her son at the end of the episode, but I also realized I saw it before. Not sure if I saw the rehab episode, but I probably did. There's not much I'll watch instead of ATGaS.

I can't find the post but you were discussing Frankie Drake and Miss Scarlet on PBS. IIRC you said that one of them only produced 6 episodes. In fact, Frankie Drake Mysteries was 41 episodes over 4 years, and Miss Scarlet, which is still producing new episodes, is 36 episodes over 5 years.

I also enjoy both. Did you recognize Frankie Drake from CSI? I couldn't place her at first. Lauren Lee Smith portrayed CSI Riley Adams.
