Caitlin Clark sets 3-point record as Iowa wins in Big Ten tourney

Friday was a rough 3-point shooting game for Iowa star Caitlin Clark, but she has had a great career from long range overall.

In the No. 2 seed Hawkeyes' 95-62 victory over No. 7 Penn State in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals, Clark's two 3-pointers gave her 164, the most ever in a season by a Division I player (women or men).

... Clark missed 11 attempts from behind the arc before making her first with 8:41 left in the game. She held up her arms in mock celebration after that 3, drawing a big ovation from the sellout crowd of mostly Hawkeyes fans at Target Center.

... Clark has been held without a 3-pointer only once in her Iowa career: She went 0-for-6 from behind the arc in a victory vs. Purdue on Jan. 13, 2022, when she was a sophomore.

For her career, Clark has 511 3-pointers. The NCAA women's career record was set by Oklahoma's Taylor Robertson last season with 537, although that was her fifth season because of the COVID-19 waiver from 2020-21. Clark is in her fourth season, which will be her last, as she previously announced she'll enter the WNBA draft.

North Carolina didn't waste an opportunity to celebrate the program's first outright Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title in seven years on the homecourt of fierce rival Duke.

The seventh-ranked Tar Heels gathered by the midcourt sideline near the "Cameron Crazies" and waved goodbye in a taunting farewell, only to be answered by several people throwing water and empty plastic bottles at them in frustration.

No matter, figured the Tar Heels. Not after Saturday night's 84-79 win that secured the top seed in the ACC tournament and a season sweep of the ninth-ranked Blue Devils that saw UNC trail for just 16 seconds between the two games.

Ouch.

"I definitely think it was uncalled for, but I mean, it's a rivalry game so I kind of expected it," UNC guard RJ Davis said with a smile....

Wait, couldn't that be said about the "taunting farewell"?

Kyle Filipowski had 23 points to lead the Blue Devils, while retired Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski made a rare courtside appearance for the game.

That's a lot of consonants between two people.

"We didn't play our best basketball overall," Filipowski said, adding: "We're still one of the best teams in the country. Our season's not defined by UNC."

Umm, it kind of is, especially if UNC makes it 3-0 in the ACC tournament.

Caitlin Clark sets Big Ten tournament scoring mark in Iowa win

When it comes to the Big Ten women's basketball tournament, Iowa's Caitlin Clark has maximized her opportunities. Sunday will mark her fourth Big Ten championship game, part of why she has become the tournament's all-time leading scorer.

Clark nabbed that mark -- yet another in her record-setting senior season -- in Saturday's semifinals as No. 2 seed Iowa beat No. 6 Michigan 95-68. With her 28 points, Clark has 293 (and counting) in the Big Ten tournament for her career. She also became the first Division I women's player to score at least 1,000 points in multiple seasons.

She now has 1,020 points so far this season; she had 1,055 as a junior. Clark is 90 points from breaking the NCAA single-season scoring record of 1,109 set by Washington's Kelsey Plum in 2016-17. Clark already broke Plum's NCAA career scoring record -- that came in the Hawkeyes' regular-season win over Michigan on Feb. 15.

"Yeah, we were the lucky ones that got to be at Iowa when Caitlin broke the record, so we kind of were in the same environment today," Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico ruefully said of the sold-out Target Center crowd of mostly Iowa fans Saturday. "Any time they made a run, the place erupted, or any time there was a big play, the place erupted."

There were plenty of both for Iowa (28-4), which will face No. 5 seed Nebraska for the championship. Iowa is going for its sixth overall Big Ten tournament title and third in a row. The Hawkeyes lost to Maryland in the title game in Clark's freshman season but have defeated Indiana and Ohio State in the past two championship games.

"Obviously breaking the Big Ten record is something that's really hard to do. These games are never guaranteed. You can come here and just play one game, and it can be over. Clark also had 15 assists on Saturday. She already set the Big Ten tournament career assist record last year with 78 over three seasons. This year, she increased her total to 100 -- the most assists by any women's player in any conference tournament over the past 25 seasons.

Also during that 25-season span, there have been two instances of a Division I player getting at least 25 points and 15 assists in a conference tournament game. Both were by Clark: Saturday and in last season's Big Ten final against Ohio State....
