Re: Single hurricane thread
So many conspiracy theories being spread around about this hurricane. It's insane.
- FEMA is only giving out 750 bucks and telling everyone to get fucked.
- The gov is trying to take the land around chimney rock to Mike lithium
- the hurricane was caused by the deep state or some other shadowy entity.
- FEMA money was diverted from disasters to illegal immigrants and now none is left.
- People trying to help are being arrested by the government.
- FEMA is stealing goods donated and hoarding them and not helping.
And so forth.

Unbelievable. Used to be people knew to band together in a disaster and political/religious issues were put aside at least temporarily. Now it's just another excuse to point a finger of blame.

Sometimes I think of Thomas Wolfe and "You can't go home again" when I think of places I've lived or places I've worked that just done exist anymore. But usually it's because of gradual growth or development over time, or a company getting sold or merging. It's bad when it's instantaneous.

The house I lived in was a 1960's era two story slab home on the bay, maybe a quarter mile from the gulf. The water is projected to be into the second floor.O Really wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 1:39 pmSometimes I think of Thomas Wolfe and "You can't go home again" when I think of places I've lived or places I've worked that just done exist anymore. If you're not familiar with Longboat Key, it's a barrier island off if Sarasota and it's an eleven mile long sandbar that is a little over half a mile wide at its widest point.
I lived in a Crane Bayou in the middle.

What a great place to spend a boyhood. I had to pay dues in the northeast winters before getting to live in Florida. But aren't we both glad not to live there anymore - for more reasons other than the hurricanes.

Yeah, I grew up pretty privileged. I had a boat, as did most of my friends. Water skiing and boating were a way of life. I became a certified diver at 14 years old and we would dive the (mostly barren) gulf. We'd fish, shrimp and catch our own stone crabs.

I've put it down and picked it up since I got certified.
Haven't been for about ten years, before that I'd go to the Caribbean at least once a year. Bonaire was my favorite spot. The whole west side of the island is one big shore dive spot and every dive is world class. You rent a car or truck and get unlimited tanks for twenty bucks a day and dive to your hearts content without the crowds.

You guys were more informed on my wider 'hood than me. Once the local Stop-n-Rob got power I got newspapers. My TV only came on this evening.

Where did one go for doughnuts? I used up sandwich stuff and yogurt from the frig. Luckily, I was and still am well stocked for food.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 10:05 pmWelcome back.
Hendersonville is a disaster area there's very little information coming out. 99% of the county is without power and the water and sewer systems are down.
This was posted yesterday from the county government. Haven't seen any updates. Here's a link for the City of hendersonville.Current Situation:
Henderson County has declared a State of Emergency due to Hurricane Helene. The State of Emergency is also proclaimed at the request of the Mayors in the Town of Fletcher, Town of Laurel Park, Village of Flat Rock and Town of Mills River. The City of Hendersonville has also declared a State of Emergency as revoking all special event permits until the end of the state of emergency.
Henderson County has announced a curfew is effect from 8:00pm to 8:00am until conditions improve.

Vrede is eating cheese crackers, doughnuts and whatever he's got in a can.
Henderson and Buncombe counties were the worst hit of anywhere. Some 'hoods are still isolated I can't complain, so many people fared way worse than me. 115 dead in WNC, over 100 still missing.
Everything we've always seen about hurricanes, other than storm surge, gets made uglier by mountain roads, narrow valleys with steep slopes and millions of trees.

Re: Single hurricane thread
Thanks. All good, except Whack9. My Atlanta family got 7" of rain, but the worst of the storm missed them and they didn't lose any trees.
We got 7" of rain 2 days BEFORE Helene arrived, then she dumped up to 30" more on us
