... Reminds me of the idiot coach that cut Michael Jordan and said he didn't have talent to play.
I figured that such idiocy should be attached to a name. I failed at that but learned more about MJ. No surprise that even then he worked his ass off, but he is such a beast that he even grew 4 inches when he needed to. Now THAT is will power!
Michael Jordan Didn't Make Varsity—At First

In 1978, Michael Jordan was just another kid in the gym, along with 50 or so of his classmates, trying out for the Emsley A. Laney High School varsity basketball team. There were 15 roster spots. Jordan—then a 15-year-old sophomore who was only 5'10" and could not yet dunk a basketball—did not get one. His close friend, 6'7'' sophomore Leroy Smith, did ("the only sophomore to make the team"). The team was in need of his length. "It was embarrassing not making the team," Jordan later said. He went home, locked himself in his room and cried.

Then he picked himself up and turned the cut into motivation. "Whenever I was working out and got tired and figured I ought to stop, I'd close my eyes and see that list in the locker room without my name on it," Jordan would explain. "That usually got me going again."

Jordan, using that sizable chip on his shoulder to his advantage, spent his sophomore year as the star of the junior varsity team. He put up multiple 40-point games and attracted crowds that were unprecedented for a JV affair.

The summer leading into his junior year, Jordan began to morph. In 1979 he grew 4 inches and worked out constantly. That year he made the varsity squad and instantly became Laney High's best player, averaging more than 20 points a game. Despite having secured his spot on the team, Jordan's work ethic didn't drop off. His senior year he averaged a triple-double and led Laney High to a 19-4 record. Jordan capped off his high school career in style, being named a McDonald's All-American. He wasn't yet His Airness, but he was well on his way.
Not sure if it was the same coach his sophomore and junior years, but the odds probably favor it. I wonder what their record was that year without him.

Here's a good story - Paradise (CA) Bobcats, 12-0 so far for the season, play for the division championship tonight. This is one year after the whole town of Paradise burned down. Damaged the field so they started practising on a gravel field while the regular field was repaired. Aaron Rodgers (grad of another close-by school) bought them new uniforms and equipment. Only three players still have houses in Paradise - the rest commute in to school, and then back after practice. And even unbeaten, they had to go through all sorts of hoops to get into the playoffs because they were trying to keep them out on some technicality. More adversity than anybody ought to have to deal with. Still, they're playing for the Championship. Roll Bobcats!

Yeah, Paradise went down 20-7. Too bad. But those guys - and the residents - had a season to remember.

14 points from a big budget Hollywood movie about them, but 'made for TV' is nothing to sneeze at ;) .

A real QB would want to play tougher opposition than the Pussies schedule.

Cooter is a southern slang term for a vagina. Also known as a North American Maryland river turtle with a dull brown shell and typically having yellow stripes on the head.

Newtown wins football state championship with a walk-off touchdown on anniversary of Sandy Hook school shooting

... Ward caught the pass in stride, took two steps and was in the end zone as time expired with a 36-yard touchdown, giving Newtown a 13-7 walk-off state championship win and clinching a perfect season — seven years to the day of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings that left 26 children and educators dead....

Some members of the team had attended Sandy Hook. Ben Pinto, whose younger brother Jack was killed in the shooting, plays linebacker for Newtown.

To honor the victims, Newtown supporters were largely clad in green apparel and face paint to honor the Sandy Hook victims. The cheerleaders wore green bows atop their head. Many Newtown players had green tape, paint or apparel on their person somewhere. Even fans from Darien wore green....

Long after Darien had left the field and boarded its buses, and the celebration had died down from a raucous roar to low murmur, the Newtown team, alongside friends, families and supporters gathered at midfield and celebrated among themselves,

The fog had disappeared. It was just shades of blue, white, and green, and a football family.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Ward said. “I love this town, I love everybody. I’m at a loss for words.”
The article doesn't say whether any of the players were in Sandy Hook Elementary that day, but it seems very possible. Current seniors would have been 5th graders.

It warps the mind to consider the strides made in the last 7 years in reducing the liklihood of somebody like Lanza getting a 30-shot magazine for a military style killing machine and shooting more than 20 kids. Just think, they've passed a law on.... uh wait. They've restricted...hmm... they're doing better backgrounds...um no, not that. They've improved enforcement of current law...well, not really. Hmmm, I guess they've given a lot of thoughts and prayers - yeah that's working.

Yeah, but high school football is somewhat safer now, as are college and pro. We can take action to protect kids and other Americans . . . unless it involves guns.

5-star Clemson commit goes off in final high school game

DJ Uiagalelei shined in his final game as a high school football player on Saturday night.

The five-star Clemson commit completed 23 of his 28 passes for 398 yards and four touchdowns, leading St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) to a 49-28 victory over De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) in the CIF Open Division state title game. Uiagalelei also rushed for 64 yards and scored on a 9-yard run. He threw touchdown passes of 6, 13, 20 and 71 yards.

Bosco built a 21-7 halftime lead over De La Salle, thanks to two Uiagalelei touchdowns, and then took a 35-13 lead in the third quarter after another Uiagalelei touchdown pass.

However, De La Salle came storming back to cut its deficit to 35-28 with less than 10 minutes to play. But Uiagalelei quickly answered back, moving the ball down the field with completions of 24, 29 and 11 yards before scoring on a 9-yard run to give his team a two-touchdown lead again.

Two weeks ago, Uiagalelei threw for 444 yards and five touchdowns to help Bosco overcome a 23-point deficit in the first half to defeat Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) by a score of 39-34 for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title.

In 14 games as a senior this season, Uiagalelei threw for 4,213 yards and 48 touchdowns with just two interceptions, while also rushing for 409 yards and eight more scores on the ground. Uiagalelei is set to sign with the Tigers this Wednesday and enroll early at Clemson in January. He will play in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 4 as well as the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii on Jan. 18.

As outspoken as he against paying players, it appears that dabo has been fired in the past for paying players under the table.

Unless the 2 years as a real estate agent cured him, there's a good chance he still pays for players.
