WNC Barn Owl Live Cam (and audio)

Mated pair, 6 eggs "due to hatch any day now", massive cuteness imminent

I love owls 🦉.
At least one has hatched, sounds like more!

EDIT: Looks like a 2nd one MAY be hatching.
#3 just hatched. I never knew that there would be 3+ days between hatches. It's not like the sea turtles that all hatch within minutes of each other.

There's a fly that's annoying me. It's like it's in my room, not her nest box.
Two more eggs?

Could be. I'll post when she lets me see for sure. I wonder what the evolutionary advantage is in there being such a gap in hatches. It's a lot of energy to invest in a dead end.

EDIT: Yep, that's what I see. #4 has hatched, 7 days after #1. :headscratch:

EDIT: Dad has been hanging out a lot, just brought another rodent which she snatched right away while he mounted her. :headscratch:

She's gobbling down, regurgitating and gobbling the rodent. Cool and  at the same time.

 She chuckles when she's feeding owlets. Signal that it's dinnertime?

Dad was busy in the evening, bringing 3 rodents during the short periods I was watching. I don't think I've ever gone grocery shopping for the family at least 3 times in a day, let alone a single evening. He also mounted her twice that I saw. I have done that. :o ;)

#1 has gotten SO big! Feathers developing? #s 2 & 3 are close behind. Mom has now started hissing :headscratch: . She struggles to cover all the owlets at once.

Could only see one chick but mom is feasting on a huge critter.

I see 5 wriggling owlets and one intact egg. I also watched Mom hold a chunk of beast for two of the bigger birdies to peck at.

BREAKING: American millionaire big game hunter gets trampled to death by elephants while hunting rare antelope in Africa!

In one of the most on-the-nose eff around and find out incidents you could possibly describe, California vineyard tycoon Ernie Dosio was out hunting antelope in Gabon when he startled a herd of elephants with a calf, who correctly saw him as a threat and trampled him.

Dosio was an avid hunter and had filled his home with trophies of all the endangered animals he bravely murdered with a high-powered rifle from a safe distance away.

The elephants will not have a chance to mount him in their living room, however, as the government of Gabon is arranging the transfer of his remains back to the United States.

It's so sickening to see the wealthy frolic around the world, killing whatever they want while whitewashing it as "conservation" just so they can make themselves feel like a proud caveman in a house filled with grotesque monuments to man's inadequacy complex.

The American millionaire has a hard time understanding that their wealth can't protect them from *everything.*

I saw Dad sitting on the "porch" in full sunlight, beautiful bird!

A couple of times I've watched owlets swallowing huge chunks of beast, bigger than their heads.

Catnaps, ironic.

Yeah, I've wondered if it becomes a failed egg at some point.

New shell? #6 finally hatched? -0-? 22 days after #1! :wtf: Be interesting to see if #6 survives. If so, that's part of the evolutionary plan.

No shit?

TIL

Egg Laying Process
A female barn owl usually lays a clutch of 4 to 7 eggs over several days, with intervals of 2 to 3 days between each egg
. This results in chicks of varying ages within the same brood, which can affect their survival and development.

No shit.

#6 is still intact!!! It's mostly kept warm by a wriggling cuddle pile of tiny dinosaurs. We're almost up to an average of 4 days between each egg, but that's been boosted by this last laaggard.
