How Hot Is the Sea Off Florida Right Now? Think 90s Fahrenheit.

... The biggest concern for coral isn’t just the current sea surface temperatures in the Florida Keys, even though they are the hottest on record. The daily average surface temperature off the Keys on Monday was just over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.4 Celsius), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The real worry, scientists say, is that it’s only July. Corals typically experience the most heat stress in August and September.

“We’re entering uncharted territories,” said Derek Manzello, an ecologist and the coordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch program....

California and Arizona brace for 'historic' heat wave with possible temperatures over 120°F

... The National Weather Service also issued an excessive heat warning for Phoenix through Sunday, with temperatures forecast to reach 118°F on Saturday, still a few degrees below the all-time record of 122°F.

"Widespread areas of Major Heat Risk will increase to Extreme levels this weekend," the NWS forecast office in Phoenix said in a statement.

Temperatures in the city have already topped 110°F for the last 12 consecutive days, nearing its all-time record of 18 consecutive days over 110°F, which was set in 1974. In the early morning hours Wednesday, Phoenix did break a notable record, when the all-time low temperature registered on July 12 only fell to 94°F.

Temperature records are also expected to fall in Reno, Nev., and Las Vegas is forecast to reach a blistering 117°F this weekend, which would tie the city's all-time record....

More evidence of climate change

Caused by a surge of high pressure that traps ocean heat over land, the latest heat dome comes as the National Weather Service has issued heat alerts for 108 million Americans and the Earth recorded its warmest week and its hottest June in recorded history. Pulling back the lens, with the June figures, the planet recorded its 532nd consecutive month of above-average temperatures. An ocean heat wave now spans the globe, sending water temperatures in the Florida Keys to an unprecedented 97°F, and Canadian wildfires, made worse by record-breaking temperatures, continue to burn out of control.

While skeptics counter that summers are always hot, the fact is they are getting hotter and countless studies have shown that those higher temperatures are having a wide array of disruptive consequences, such as the historic flash flooding in New York and Vermont this week and record low Antarctic sea ice.

After a coolish Spring we're in the midst of a long stretch of 80s during the day 60s at night, rain or shine. Not so unusual for Summer here except perhaps for how sustained it's been.

Now a month. We had one rainy day last week where the high dipped to 79, that's it. The lows have stayed in the 60s throughout.

While heat alerts have been lifted in much of the Southeast, some remain in southeastern Texas and South Florida. It will still be hot elsewhere in the Southeast.

Record-setting temperatures plaguing the planet

The last 20 days on Earth have been the hottest 20 days on record, meteorology records show. The hottest day ever recorded in the northern hemisphere was measured on Saturday, when average temperatures reached 22.46 degrees Celsius -- or about 72.43 degrees Fahrenheit. The previous record, 22.18 degrees Celsius -- about 71.92 degrees Fahrenheit -- was set in summer 2022.

Several places in the U.S. broke records on Saturday as well. Palm Springs, California, hit 115 degrees on Saturday, breaking its record for consecutive days of 115 degrees, now nine days in a row. Temperatures are expected to drop closer to 110 degrees by Monday and through the week.

I hiked a little in Palm Springs one year. It was searing and unbearable. I bailed out and went indoors. It was probably "only" in the 90s.

Phoenix broke a daily record on Saturday with a high of 118 degrees, continuing its record stretch with 23 consecutive days with temperatures at or above 110 degrees and six days in a row with temperatures at 115 degrees or higher. Sunday morning also continued the city's record stretch of 14 consecutive days of not dropping below 90 degrees.

I would be making plans to move.

When Las Vegas reached 115 degrees on Saturday, it broke a record set in 1937 at 114 degrees, extending its streak to nine days in a row at or above 110 degrees. The record for consecutive days above 110 degrees could be broken on Monday.

I considered moving to Las Vegas at one point. Phew, dodged that bullet.

Tucson, Arizona, hit a daily record of 111 degrees on Saturday, shattering the record set in 2006 at 108 degrees. The city is now at eight days in a row at 110 degrees or above, tying with the record set in 2021. Tucson is also extending the record for the total number of non-consecutive days at 110 degrees or above, now at 14 days this year. The previous records were set in 1990 and 1994, at 10 days.

Damn, I liked my Tucson visit.

In El Paso, Texas, the record-smashing consecutive days of 100 degrees or higher is currently at 37 days, with no end in sight in the foreseeable future. The previous record was set in 1994, at 23 consecutive days.

On the East Coast, Miami has now had a heat index of 100 degrees or higher for a record 42 consecutive days, 10 days over the previous record of 32 set in 2020.

Alaska is also feeling the heat. The National Weather Service in Caribou is predicting the region's hottest month ever (of any month) for this July, with records going back to 1939....

Temperatures are expected to skyrocket in the 90s and 100s in places like Fargo, North Dakota; Lincoln, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri and Minneapolis this week. Some regions will experience heat indices of 105 degrees or more.

The heat will continue to blanket much of the U.S. through the end of July and into August, especially in the South....

Then, there's Europe, particularly burning Greece. The planet is screwed.

Several years ago, I did some work for the Gila River Tribe and also the city of Eloy AZ. During on trip out there it got up to 111, and was 95 in the morning on the way to breakfast. Wasn't really as bad as it sounds, but that was only a few days. The dryness and dust seemed worse to me than the heat. Can't imagine living in that for an extended period of time.

The water quality station at Manatee Bay in Everglades National Park had a sea surface temperature reading of 101.1 on July 24, 2023.

The ‘world’s coldest village’ just experienced the highest temperature it’s ever recorded: ‘A particularly acute threat’

A heat wave roasted the Russian village of Oymyakon, bringing record temperatures to “the world’s coldest permanently inhabited settlement,” the Russian news outlet RT reported in July.

Wildfires also torched the Siberian Yakutia region, also known as Sakha Republic, where Oymyakon is located.

What happened?

Based on local reports, the temperature in Oymyakon reached 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit on July 3, exceeding the record set in 1949 by 2.7 degrees.

Aisen Nikolaev, head of Sakha Republic, declared a state of emergency as wildfires intensified. The Oymyakon district was among the areas most affected, Nikolaev said on his (non-English) Telegram channel....

Forecast calls for 108? Phoenix will take it, as record-breaking heat expected to end

A hellish and historic 31-day run of temperatures cracking 110 degrees (43 degrees Celsius) in Phoenix appeared headed for a welcome end on Monday, as monsoon rains moved through the region from Mexico.

The relief wasn't all that great — the day's highs were forecast near 108 degrees, or about 42 Celsius — and the heat was expected to rise past 110 again later in the week. But residents and visitors were taking what they could get....

High heat blasted much of the Southwest all through July, ranging from West Texas to eastern California. But Phoenix and its suburbs sweltered to new records, including three days where the high reached 119, and overnight lows stayed above 90 more than half the month....

Health officials have so far confirmed 25 heat-related deaths in Maricopa County, Arizona’s most populous and home to Phoenix, in July, although that number seems certain to rise. Another 249 deaths are under investigation for links to heat....

Phoenix’s previous record for days of 110 degrees or more was 18 straight, set in 1974, nearly two weeks shorter than the new record.

Hirsch said July 2023 was the city’s hottest month on record. The previous hottest month on record was August 2020.

And August could be even hotter than July, Hirsch said. He said there is a slightly higher chance of temperatures that are above normal in August and there's an equal chance for the region to get more or less rain than average....
