Unread post by bannination »

According to the Oxford English Dictionary a "Coup" is : "A sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government."

we appear to have had a double standard for some time now
.

when did we perform our first example of this double standard definition of coup
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

There was similar obfuscation with the Obama-Hillary abetted 2009 Honduran coup d'état, a tragedy that persists to today and that has contributed to the flood of asylum seekers here.

Yeah, we have supported for and supported against openly and covertly any number of coups and uncoups over the years.

Truman's claiming that France was a victim in its claim over Vietnam and cheerleading our support against an oppressed country trying to establish their democracy

and Ike promoting the South to start a hostile war after a unification treaty was signed was a takeover of the newly unified country.

And we started way earlier in central and south America

What was our first support of a bad guy takeover of a country?
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

Another factor in the Bolivian coup, as always in Latin America and many other parts of the developing world, foreign resource extraction companies:

My first experience with a coup was the one we paid for in Chile with General Pinochet leading the way. This was also during the Vietnam misadventure and when I first began to seriously doubt what and why America was doing what it was doing. And our country has never looked back but instead generally doubled down on stupid shit presented as something else.

And then there's the concept of how American Indians would "count coup" in small victories (white settlers called them massacres) over the invaders of their lands and turn those small victories into stories of bravery to be passed down within the tribe and to others. As time passed and white surpassed, coup became elusive.

Not a surprise:

Bolivia coup led by Christian fascist paramilitary leader and millionaire – with foreign support
Bolivian coup leader Luis Fernando Camacho is a far-right multi-millionaire who arose from fascist movements in the Santa Cruz region, where the US has encouraged separatism. He has courted support from Colombia, Brazil, and the Venezuelan opposition.
