Interesting how changing societal standards can make almost shocking something that once seemed normal. Consider the flap over "Baby it's Cold Outside" and several movies or movie scenes and lines in music come to mind. Add yours to the list.

But to my memory, I see something historically real worth seeing today. In spite of his subservient station in life, Uncle Remus exhibits all the qualities of a true hero. It's his wisdom that moves the story.

I don't think old films, books, artwork, etc. should be hidden or banned just because it portrays customs or language of a time past. I do think there's probably a line somewhere between leaving something available for viewing and allowing it to be promoted as if it were current. I don't know how closely (if at all) the film tracks the original stories, but the books are still available. Interesting, Harris said he wrote his stories to "preserve in permanent shape those curious mementoes of a period that will no doubt be sadly misrepresented by historians of the future."

Yeah, erasing uncomfortable history is uncomfortable to some of us.
I've never read Harris. I may have to, but I've probably forgotten too much of the Disney version to compare. I do remember that it was the depth and wisdom of the Uncle Remus character that made the movie.

"These two editions differ slightly. After completing his manuscript, Twain had a copy made of it. It is this copy which was read and annotated by his friend William Dean Howells. Howells and Twain corresponded through fairly informal, handwritten letters discussing many aspects of his works and manuscripts; language choices, character development, as well as racial development and depiction. Twain then made his own corrections based on Howells' comments which he later incorporated in the original manuscript, but some corrections escaped him. The English edition was based on this corrected copy, while the illustrated American edition was based on the original manuscript. To further complicate matters, Twain was personally concerned with the revision of the proofs of the American edition, which he did not do for the English edition. In truth, I've never seen the ENTIRE film, just parts over the years. I have ridden the theme ride at Disney World with my young daughter who paid zero attention to Breer Rabbit, the Bear or the fox. She had no clue. Let's say, at the age of 10, I'd frown on this film being shown in her classroom with her White friends. She'd have to be older to appreciate the period of time it was made and better understand it.
