Music and Movies They Couldn't Make Now
Interesting how changing societal standards can make almost shocking something that once seemed normal. Consider the flap over "Baby it's Cold Outside" and several movies or movie scenes and lines in music come to mind. Add yours to the list.
Lyrics: "Give me one for my baby, and one more for the road."
Lyrics: "Hot for Teacher"
Film: "Porky's"
Film: "Revenge of the Nerds"
Lyrics: "Every Step You Take (I'll be watching you)"
Lyrics: "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw" (Still played a lot, but probably couldn't be done new anymore)
TV: Lots of scenes from "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners" for rampant sexism and domestic violence.
Film/TV: Scenes where everybody smokes.
Lots more.

Stem and Seeds
Well, I'm sittin alone, Saturday night,
Watching the Late Late Show.
A bottle of wine, some cigarettes,
I got no place to go.
Well, I saw your other man today;
He was wearing my brand new shoes,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.
Well, I saw my old friend Bob today
From up in Bowling Green;
He had the prettiest little gal
That I'd ever seen.
But I couldn't hide my tears at all,
Cause she looked just like you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.
Now everybody tells me
There's other ways to get high.
They don't seem to understand
I'm too far gone to try.
Now these lonely memories,
They're all I can't lose,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.
Well my dog died just yesterday
And left me all alone.
The finance company dropped by today
And repossessed my home.
But that's just a drop in the bucket
Compared to losing you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.
Got the Down to Seeds an Stems again Blues.

Comic strips: "Fat Broad" and "Cute Chick" have been renamed in the comic "B.C."; and the general no longer ogles or makes leering remarks to "Miss Buxley" in "Beetle Bailey."

You remember that one...
Oh, before I forget. Just what WAS the relationship between Will Robinson and Dr Smith in "Lost in Space"?

The movie is a 1938 crime drama, but I'll bet that the title would be different now:

I learned of it perusing the TV Guide. I'm not planning to watch, though.

Of course this couldn't be made now, but, it actually has historical significance.

Song of the South
I would need to watch again before arguing that Disney should allow it to be shown.
But to my memory, I see something historically real worth seeing today. In spite of his subservient station in life, Uncle Remus exhibits all the qualities of a true hero. It's his wisdom that moves the story.
I would be interested to hear Greg's take.

I don't think old films, books, artwork, etc. should be hidden or banned just because it portrays customs or language of a time past. I do think there's probably a line somewhere between leaving something available for viewing and allowing it to be promoted as if it were current. I don't know how closely (if at all) the film tracks the original stories, but the books are still available. Interesting, Harris said he wrote his stories to "preserve in permanent shape those curious mementoes of a period that will no doubt be sadly misrepresented by historians of the future."billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2020 6:58 amSong of the South

Yeah, erasing uncomfortable history is uncomfortable to some of us.
I've never read Harris. I may have to, but I've probably forgotten too much of the Disney version to compare. I do remember that it was the depth and wisdom of the Uncle Remus character that made the movie.

Has anyone here ever read the original version of Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer"?

Re: Music and Movies They Couldn't Make Now
wiki has this
"These two editions differ slightly. After completing his manuscript, Twain had a copy made of it. It is this copy which was read and annotated by his friend William Dean Howells. Howells and Twain corresponded through fairly informal, handwritten letters discussing many aspects of his works and manuscripts; language choices, character development, as well as racial development and depiction. Twain then made his own corrections based on Howells' comments which he later incorporated in the original manuscript, but some corrections escaped him. The English edition was based on this corrected copy, while the illustrated American edition was based on the original manuscript. To further complicate matters, Twain was personally concerned with the revision of the proofs of the American edition, which he did not do for the English edition. The American edition is therefore considered the authoritative edition."
And there's a Disney movie version
Has anyone read Finn by Jon Clinch? It's a fairly new novel about Huck's dad and childhood. Very dark.

Re: Music and Movies They Couldn't Make Now
In truth, I've never seen the ENTIRE film, just parts over the years. I have ridden the theme ride at Disney World with my young daughter who paid zero attention to Breer Rabbit, the Bear or the fox. She had no clue. Let's say, at the age of 10, I'd frown on this film being shown in her classroom with her White friends. She'd have to be older to appreciate the period of time it was made and better understand it.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2020 6:58 amSong of the South
