Well, seems to me that it's the entertainment that has changed in terms of medium, such as internet, mainly. But politics and entertainment have always had a certain relationship, since both purport to speak to the masses (as does religion).

But politicians are still the same old sometimes corrupt, often cloying and duplicitous humans they've always been.

Politics has always had an entertainment component, and there have always been corrupt politicians (as well as all other occupations). But particularly since Trump, there has been not even a pretence of common courtesy, nor any opportunity for collaborative action.

I would add in other causative factors:
Evangelical politics courtesy of Falwell and Reagan.
24 hour uber-partisan news, mostly Faux Noise.
Newt's congressional nastiness.
Internet, as Useless says.
Extreme gerrymandering, mostly Repug, leading to so many so very polarized extremists in Congress and Legs.
The removal of the already weak restraints on money in politics.

IMO, Useless is wrong. Things are much worse than they were, and they are apparently unresolvable.

The Guardian is reporting that just minutes after being censured, the Arizona Republican retweeted the same video.
