Given the availability of guns in the US, pretty much anybody could shoot anybody else on any given day - and many do. Most of the time it's personal, either about money, sex, vengeance, jealousy or instant rage. Sometimes it's related to another crime, like robbery. But in the case of the mass shooters, it's most commonly revenge.

Good article below, doing an analysis of 1725 instances internationally, with an unsurprising overall count of 93% male, 60% Caucasian, 85% non-hispanic, 61% in the US, 80% with no history of known psychosis or drug use. 5.8% motivated by religious/political issues; 5.7% related to psychosis.
Oh, and 3 of the cases involved transgenders (.17%,) so clearly that's a dangerous group.

In the US, we want to make everything political right/left, or attribute actions to "mental illness". Easiest thing is to take some aspect of the shooter's life and categorize him as a trumper or antifa or something and demonize him and everybody remotely similar to him. It would be nice if those in position too actually do something paid attention to facts and legit analysis sometimes.

SHREVEPORT, La. — A Louisiana city is reeling after eight children were killed in a mass shooting Saturday night, according to police.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith and the city’s mayor addressed the shooting during a Sunday morning news conference, describing it as a domestic incident.

Police identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins.
