America's worst AG strikes again:

Latino civil rights group LULAC asks Justice Department to investigate Texas "voter fraud" raids
The League of United Latin American Citizens says Attorney General Ken Paxton is trying to intimidate Democrats

GoDoJGo

Edit: It's even worse than this one slimy tactic:
Texas GOP doubles down on fraud claims as Trump, Cruz leads shrink

... On Tuesday, Abbott announced that his office had removed more than 1 million “ineligible” voters from state rolls, including “more than 6,500 noncitizens,” of which the governor’s office claimed that “almost 2,000 have cast votes.”

Abbott added that those cases would be referred to prosecution to Paxton’s office — which has been on its own campaign against alleged voter fraud as of late.

Paxton falsely told right-wing talk show host Glenn Beck last Thursday that President Biden and Vice President Harris, now at the top of the ticket, had worked to move masses of undocumented voters into critical states to vote illegally — claims he did not back up with any basis.

“This was the plan, tell the cartels, ‘Get people here as fast as possible, as many as possible, we’re not going to make them hide anymore — we’ll get them placed in the right states,’” Paxton said. “They want to fix the election so that we have a one party country that we can’t fix.”

“No one anticipated the federal govt would work around laws to try to get illegals to vote. But here we are,” Paxton added, in a grab from the interview he posted on the social platform X.

“That’s why we have to send a message out from the states: ‘Hey illegals, this is not a free ride. If we catch you, we’re going to prosecute you.’”...
 :puke-left: :obscene-birdiered: 2024 may be the end of American democracy. :(

Ronnie Reagan is rolling over in his grave because of what his party has become.
Trump Makes Shocking Promise After Ex-Adviser Charged in Russia Scheme
One of Donald Trump’s former campaign advisers was just charged over his work for Russian state media. But Trump doesn’t seem to care.

Hours after the Justice Department announced it is charging a former Trump adviser over his work with Russian media, Donald Trump made a shocking promise: He’ll lift U.S. sanctions on Russia.

The Justice Department on Thursday charged Trump’s 2016 campaign adviser Dimitri Simes, as well as his wife, Anastasia, for working with a sanctioned Russian state television network and laundering the profit. According to the indictment, the couple received over $1 million, a personal car, and a driver for their work with Russia’s Channel One. (Simes, by the way, is mentioned over 100 times in the Mueller report, for his relationship with Trump allies like Jared Kushner.)

... The sanctions that Dimitri and Anastasia Simes violated were put in place “in response to Russia’s illegal aggression in Ukraine,” U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves said in a statement.

Thursday’s indictment comes on the heels of another Justice Department case charging two Russian state media employees in “a scheme to create and distribute content to U.S. audiences with hidden Russian government messaging.” Several prominent pro-Trump influencers were implicated in the case.

The election deniers with a chokehold on Georgia’s state election board
The Republican secretary of state and two ex-governors have said the new rules are ‘destroying confidence’ in Georgia’s election systems

A rule passed last week, which bipartisan election officials in Georgia say will delay the counting of votes in November, was introduced by an election denier who appears to believe in various rightwing conspiracies and whose apparent experience in elections dates only to February.

The rule – which requires poll workers to hand-count ballots at polling locations – was passed by an election-denier majority on the Georgia state election board on Friday. It was introduced by Sharlene Alexander, a Donald Trump supporter and member of the Fayette county board of elections, who was appointed to her position in February. Alexander’s Facebook page alludes to a belief in election conspiracies, the Guardian has found.

Alexander is one of 12 people – all election deniers – who have introduced more than 30 rules to the state election board since May, according to meeting agendas and summaries reviewed by the Guardian. Of those, the board has approved several, including two that give county election officials more discretion to refuse to certify election results, in addition to Alexander’s hand-count rule....
:angry-banghead: Back to the "credibility" of Georgia's Jim Crow years. Jimmy Carter writes about how bad things were when he entered politics.

RCP Average 9/19 - 10/8
Trump (R) 47.7
Harris (D) 47.1
Oliver (L) 0.8
Stein (G) 0.7
West (I) 0.5
spread Trump +0.6

What will this MAGA :bs: do to that margin?

MAGA tried to create chaos, but . . .
Georgia judge blocks ballot counting rule and says county officials must certify election results

A judge has blocked a new rule that requires Georgia Election Day ballots to be counted by hand after the close of voting. The ruling came a day after the same judge ruled that county election officials must certify election results by the deadline set in law.

The State Election Board last month passed the rule requiring that three poll workers each count the paper ballots — not votes — by hand after the polls close. The county election board in Cobb County, in Atlanta’s suburbs, had filed a lawsuit seeking to have a judge declare that rule and five others recently passed by the state board invalid, saying they exceed the state board’s authority, weren’t adopted in compliance with the law and are unreasonable.

In a ruling late Tuesday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney wrote, that the so-called hand count rule “is too much, too late” and blocked its enforcement while he considers the merits of the case.

McBurney on Monday had ruled in a separate case that “no election superintendent (or member of a board of elections and registration) may refuse to certify or abstain from certifying election results under any circumstance.” While they are entitled to inspect the conduct of an election and to review related documents, he wrote, “any delay in receiving such information is not a basis for refusing to certify the election results or abstaining from doing so.”

Georgia law says county election superintendents — generally multimember boards — “shall” certify election results by 5 p.m. on the Monday after an election, or the Tuesday if Monday is a holiday as it is this year.

The two rulings came as early in-person voting began Tuesday in Georgia.

They are victories for Democrats, liberal voting rights groups and some legal experts who have raised concerns that Donald Trump’s allies could refuse to certify the results if the former president loses to Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in next month’s presidential election. They have also argued that new rules enacted by the Trump-endorsed majority on the State Election Board could be used to stop or delay certification and to undermine public confidence in the results.

... The state board may be right that the rule is smart policy, McBurney wrote, but the timing of its passage makes implementing it now “quite wrong.” He invoked the memory of the riot at the U.S. Capitol by people seeking to stop the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's presidential victory on Jan. 6, 2021, writing, “Anything that adds uncertainty and disorder to the electoral process disserves the public.”...
Democracy-hating seditious MAGA stymied. LOSERS. :---P

It's Legal For College Students To Vote From Campus Housing In Wisconsin. A 'Threatening' Text Implied Otherwise.
Two groups want a voter intimidation investigation into the texts, which they say targeted young people.

... “Many students and other young voters are fearful that they will face criminal prosecution if they register and exercise their right to vote ― because of a malicious, inaccurate text sent by an anonymous party,” the letter said....

College students strongly support Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in this year’s election, polling has indicated, and their votes could be crucial in several swing states....

 Turns out a lot of this had to be settled 90 days before the election, August 7.
Federal Judge Reverses Alabama’s 'Noncitizen' Voter Purge That Caught Up Hundreds Of Real Citizens
Federal law prohibits changing voter rolls less than 90 days before an election. The judge said Alabama’s secretary of state “blew the deadline.”

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen’s (R, of course  ) attempted purge of supposed non-U.S. citizens violates the law.

District Judge Anna Manasco’s decision followed Allen’s announcement that he was removing over 3,200 people from the state’s voter rolls on Aug. 13. Under the National Voter Registration Act, states are prohibited from removing voters from the rolls during a 90-day “quiet period” prior to an election.
Anna M. Manasco was appointed by DonOLD :---P
This year, that period began on Aug. 7. A group of nonprofits representing Alabama residents and the Department of Justice filed separate lawsuits challenging the purge.

Allen “blew the deadline when he announced a purge program to begin eighty-four days before the 2024 General Election,” Manasco’s decision states.
Opps.
While Allen’s purge order purported to target noncitizens, more than 2,000 of the 3,200 people removed from the voter rolls were actually U.S. citizens. In the Justice Department lawsuit, lawyers noted that more than 700 people targeted by the purge re-registered — a sign that they were citizens all along — after Allen ordered their registrations to be deactivated. But Allen’s chief of staff testified that the true number exceeded 2,000, Manasco said while reading her opinion. These citizens were not only purged from the rolls but referred to the state attorney general for prosecution.

Manasco’s decision orders Allen to halt and reverse the voter purge program by directing county clerks to restore the purged persons to active voter status and to send them letters explaining that they are eligible to vote in the November election unless they are actually not U.S. citizens or had filed a removal request.
... Alabama is one of two states led by Republicans that have faced lawsuits for violating the 90-day quiet period. In Virginia, GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order launching his own noncitizen purge program on Aug. 7 — the day the quiet period began. A group of national nonprofits and the Department of Justice have sued, separately, to stop it.
Opps, again. RepuQs consistently fail 1st grade arithmetic.

TV news: Now, RepuQs in several swing states including NC want all overseas ballots, including from military members, set aside for "further examination". In 2020 this would have affected over 800K ballots in these states. This is yet another transparent effort to create election mistrust and chaos.

They detest democracy:
Trump allies spending millions to dissuade voters in key states from polls

Key rightwing legal groups with ties to Donald Trump and his allies have banked millions of dollars from conservative foundations and filed multiple lawsuits challenging voting rules in swing states that are already sowing distrust of election processes and pushing dangerous conspiracy theories, election watchdogs warn.

They also warn that the groups appear to be laying the groundwork for a concerted challenge to the result of November’s presidential election if Trump is defeated by Kamala Harris....

“We’re seeing much more litigation from Trump allies this election cycle, targeted at swing states, which appears to lack evidence,” warned David Becker, who runs the nonpartisan non-profit Center for Election Innovation & Research.

Becker noted, critically, that the lawsuit plaintiffs often knew about the challenged policies, including issues relating to voting lists, non-citizen voting, mail voting and military voting, years or even decades earlier, and seem to have intentionally waited until the last minute to file their lawsuits. “While they’re very unlikely to get the relief they’re seeking, this could later fuel claims that the election was stolen,” he said....

Similarly, Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, the former Republican representative, told the Guardian: “I believe Trump’s allies are planning to challenge the certification of votes in various battleground states if he loses. I think they’re trying to lay the groundwork post-election for litigation challenging certification.”

Ultimately, Noble (Larry, a former general counsel at the Federal Election Commission) emphasized that the wave of lawsuits poses long-run dangers to democracy and election security by “creating an atmosphere that presents a real and present threat to the safety of election workers who have a long record of running free and fair elections”.

“These are not just the efforts of some fringe groups and this is not truly about election integrity,” he said. “These are efforts being supported by Trump and the [Republican National Committee] … and the claims of election fraud have long been debunked. The end goal appears to be to put Trump back in power regardless of the cost to the country and our democracy.”
These assholes are deliberately plotting for an insurrection. Traitors!

May not matter:

Nate Silver: ‘My gut says’ Trump will win

Mine too, but it's been my longtime habit to be pessimistic. I keep reminding myself of what O Really wrote about youth and other first time voters not being counted in the polls. It helps a little.
... “Instead, you should resign yourself to the fact that a 50-50 forecast really does mean 50-50,” he continued. “And you should be open to the possibility that those forecasts are wrong, and that could be the case equally in the direction of Mr. Trump or Ms. Harris.”

... Silver noted, however, that polling errors could impact the result, and predicting which direction they will go is not easy. Trump memorably outperformed expectations in 2016 and even more so in 2020, but the pollster explained that in the 2012 election, then-President Obama won and outperformed in the polls....
My inner Pollyanna wants to believe that decent and patriotic Americans can't stomach TRE465QN. We'll see.

Judge blocks Virginia's move to purge voter rolls as US election nears

A U.S. federal judge on Friday blocked Virginia's removal of people it said had not proved their citizenship from its voter rolls, saying it ran afoul of a federal prohibition on purging large numbers of voters in the final 90 days before an election.

U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles ordered the state to restore the eligibility of voters it had removed, less than two weeks before Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris face off in the Nov. 5 election....
:---P Take that, RepuQ democracy-haters.
(Gov, R) Youngkin said the state will appeal the ruling and take it to the U.S. Supreme Court, if needed.

Meet the Pennsylvania nuns falsely accused of voter fraud

For a Republican canvasser going door-to-door to get out the vote in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, the address on East Lake Road in Erie must have seemed like Heaven-sent evidence of the sort of widespread voter fraud many in his party have been complaining about since Donald Trump lost the election to Joe Biden in 2020.

There were 53 voters registered at the address, the site of a Catholic church, but not a single one actually living there, Cliff Maloney, a conservative operative and founder of The Pennsylvania Chase, claimed on X in a post that quickly went viral.

But there were voters at that address – dozens of them actually. Fifty-five hard-to-miss nuns of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie.
:laughing-rolling: Idiots.
... “We’re not a group that’s just going to let them walk all over us like that,” said Sister Cook.

“People can vote for whoever they want to vote for, but don’t lie,” she added....
Ouch, scolded by nuns :---P

Of course, the RepuQs have been too cowardly to apologize. Wimps.

Cam Captured Ex-MAGA Candidate Stuffing Ballots in His Pocket

A self-described “MAGA candidate” turned himself in to police Tuesday after security cameras allegedly captured him stuffing a pair of ballots into his pocket during a test of voting machines he was appointed to oversee.

The straight-out-of-TV incident allegedly took place in central Indiana, where Larry Lee Savage Jr. lost a Republican primary earlier this year while running to represent the state’s 5th congressional district.

Despite winning a measly 1.9 percent of the vote, the 51-year-old was still called upon to observe a public test of voting machines in Madison County—a procedure that’s done to instill confidence in the machines’ accuracy with media members, candidates, and local political figures reportedly in attendance....

Police were called upon to investigate and they say Savage was the culprit of the missing ballots with a stack of evidence against him. In addition to allegedly catching him on security footage, the Star reported that police also found the ballots—one blank, the other straight Republican—inside his home during a search. Cops also claimed they uncovered texts where Savage admitted to the theft.

“Sis they say anything about the ballots I took?” Savage allegedly texted to a Republican official who was also in attendance, according to the Star....
Moron.
Savage faces a charge of destroying or misplacing a ballot and one charge of theft.
:---P Lock him up!
A video was posted to Facebook of Savage addressing the allegations just before he turned himself in to police.

“I guess this is what they do to political opponents,” he said before declaring, “I’m innocent, I’m innocent, I’m innocent.”

As he walked away he told the camera, “I’ve got some f---ed up charges on me. The truth is going to come out.”
