DeSantis Takes On the Education Establishment, and Builds His Brand
Open Letter In Defense of AP African American Studies

We are over 200 African American Studies faculty in higher education at dozens of colleges and universities and we are concerned about the future of our field. We write this letter to broadcast our outrage at the efforts of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to delegitimize the AP’s pilot curriculum in African American Studies, to intimidate the College Board into appeasement and wholesale revisions, and to deny the young citizens of his state the world-class education to which they have a right....

College Board Upends AP African American Studies Course After Attack By Ron DeSantis
On the first day of Black History Month, the board released a curriculum for the new course excluding many of the topics that originally angered conservatives.

Fascist DerSantis is cementing his credentials as an anti-democratic, anti-worker, homicidal Gov:

DeSantis' plans for Florida this year include tax cuts for gas stoves and more elections police. The proposals are widely viewed as targeting GOP voters nationally.

Also:
Banning vaccine and mask mandates
Cracking down on teachers' unions

DeSantis wants to make it harder for teachers to enroll and stay in Unions. Under a plan rolled out in December, teachers who work in Florida would have to send a check to their unions every month rather than automatically deduct the dues from their paychecks.
Overhauling higher education
To the point where it's neither "higher" nor "education".
More funding for elections police and shipping migrants to other states = voter suppression, kidnapping and human trafficking.
Loosening gun restrictions
Because FL is sooo oppressive on ammosexuals. :violin:

 He seizes on every cretinous Faux Noise meme as a basis for policy.

"Brian Covey, an entrepreneur in his late thirties, came to pick up his daughter, who’s in second grade, and his son, who’s in fifth. His kids looked confused. “Did you hear what happened at school today?” his daughter asked. “They took all the books out of the classrooms.” Covey asked which books. “All the books,” she said."

"Covey went into the school classrooms to see what his children were talking about and found bookshelves papered over to hide the books. (He also went to another local school and later uploaded a video to Twitter showing that its shelves were bare.)"

Will there be an electronic book burning and phones and computers and all other evil devices full of books?

Again and again ronnie shows his incredible inability to think through his fascist (and expensive) ideas.

Meanwhile DeSantis gets his ass kicked

"ACLU’s Win Against Classroom Censorship

At the end of 2022, a federal judge blocked Florida from enforcing the Stop Wrongs Against Our Kids and Employees Act (Stop W.O.K.E. Act) in the state’s colleges and universities.

The order came in a lawsuit we filed on behalf of seven instructors and one student in higher education institutions across Florida to challenge the Stop W.O.K.E. Act, which limits the ways concepts related to systemic racism and sex discrimination can be discussed in teaching or conducting training in workplaces or schools.

These are the kinds of victories the ACLU is fighting for every day. Add your name to help defend civil liberties with the ACLU.

In Florida, we argued the law violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments because it restricts instructors from teaching and students from learning certain viewpoints, the law is unconstitutionally vague, and it intentionally discriminates against Black instructors and students.

This victory is a huge win for the First Amendment, and it lays the groundwork for future ACLU victories to come. But we need your support to continue fighting book bans and classroom censorship nationwide. Add your name today if you’re with us.

Thanks for your support,

Team ACLU"

Before Trump, I don't recall it frequently being a common strategy for a governor to do or order something that is clearly illegal on its face and then saying "so sue me." Sure, if the legality is questionable, or if it hasn't been decided in court, or if this or if that, but when any idiot can tell it's illegal and just go do it anyway? Gets by with it for a year or two before getting smacked down. Common now. Too bad it's another erosion of what we used to think was the "rule of law."

It seems to be attracting voters in Florida. Winning is good, but losing can be better. Losing shows him as a victim of the libberl courts.

Exactly. Fascist DerSantis doesn't care if the law is upheld or how long it lasts. All he cares about are the 2024 primaries. IMO he's assuring a November loss if he's the nominee, but what do I know?

This may play with the Florida base but probably won't be a good look beyond the hard cores for a general election.

Also, isn't Disney a pretty big bear to poke?

A very big bear. And very used to being sued, suing, and dealing with regulators. They've been very cordial about all this so far, which is somewhat surprising, but I doubt they're really rolling over peacefully. Actually, there are law firms around Orlando who specialize in suing Disney. I don't know how many lawyers they have now in-house - used to be 350 or so - but they farm out a lot of work to private firms. They're the largest employer in Orange County and one of the largest in Florida. And other than the anti-gay zealots, and despite bitching about ticket prices, nobody really hates them. We'll see.

Handy comprehensive guide to Fascist DerSantis stupidity:
Tough-guy Ron DeSantis defeats Woke Disney! Except ... he didn’t. At all.

Florida's governor bravely takes on ... Disney? ...

DeSantis' Disney victory not all it was cracked up to be ...

'BIG loss for conservatives' ...

DeSantis said he forced changes to an AP course – but he didn't ...

(impotent migrant flight and several lawsuits)

Florida lawmakers spending time cleaning up DeSantis' war-on-woke messes ...

Florida: Where woke goes to die ... or not

... Rumor has it the former president and current presidential candidate is sitting around pondering possible nicknames for DeSantis, who many expect will enter the Republican presidential primary.

How about Paper-Tiger Ron? Or maybe Ron FakeSantis? Ron “All Woke Sizzle, No Woke Steak” DeSantis?

I dunno, I’m just spitballing here. I’ll leave it to Trump to figure it out. It’s literally the only thing he’s good at – which means he’s good at one more thing than Florida’s all-show-no-go governor.

Even Gingrich calls bill insane, but I doubt anyone but the neut knows why.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... ers-insane

"A Florida bill that would require bloggers who write about the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, to register with the state proved a step too far even for the godfather of far-right Republicanism, the former US House speaker Newt Gingrich."

“'The idea that bloggers criticising a politician should register with the government is insane,” Gingrich wrote on Twitter."

"The bill defines “elected state officer” as “the governor, the lieutenant governor, a cabinet officer, or any member of the legislature”. As penalty for failure to comply, it posits fines of up to $2,500."

I'm not sure if anyone has discussed this bill. I tried a week or so ago during my forced hiatus. That article indicated how easy it would be to arrest those of us who routinely laugh at little Ron.
