Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) tried to make the case for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as House speaker on Tuesday, but her comments caused some members of Congress to audibly gasp.
While nominating Jordan for the job, Stefanik claimed that he “is the voice of the American people who have felt voiceless for far too long. Whether as judiciary chair, conservative leader, or representative for his constituents in West Central Ohio, whether on the wrestling mat or in the committee room, Jim Jordan is strategic, scrappy, tough and principled.”
Jordan was a voice for molestation. He helped keep the wrestler/victims voiceless.
The “wrestling mat” comment may not have left the impression Stefanik intended.
When Jordan was an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University between 1986 and 1994, he reportedly ignored molestation allegations against the team’s doctor, Richard Strauss.
Although Jordan has denied that he knew anything about the allegations, Mike DiSabato, a former wrestler and friend of Jordan’s, said in 2018 that the lawmaker “is absolutely lying if he says he doesn’t know what was going on.”
Another former OSU wrestler, Dunyasha Yetts, told NBC News earlier this month that the congressman’s “hypocrisy is unbelievable.”
“He doesn’t deserve to be House speaker,” Yetts said. “He still has to answer for what happened to us.”
A 2019 report from the university found that Strauss, who died in 2005, committed nearly 1,500 sexual assaults on student-patients while he worked there.
... Many people on X, formerly known as Twitter, had strong thoughts about the mention and whether Stefanik realized that Jordan’s wrestling history is not a selling point for many people.
Jim Jordan wasn’t a voice for the voiceless on that wrestling mat. He covered up sexual abuse for years.
Jim understands Americans who long for fascism, who yearn to look away as their kids are sexually abused, who are too lazy to do any actual work if it’s not half assed showboating. Real salt of the earth.
These people must be getting dubbed then on conservative “news” and talk radio because they don’t seem voiceless lol
... The survey of 1,675 U.S. adults, which was conducted from Oct. 12 to 16, found that a full two-thirds (66%) now say conservative Republicans deserve at least “some” blame for “the current gridlock in Washington” (up 7 points since January), while nearly as many (64%, up 11 points) say the same about moderate Republicans.
In contrast, there has been no change in the number of Americans who say progressive Democrats deserve at least some blame (57%), while the number who say moderate Democrats deserve at least some blame (52%, up 2 points) has barely budged.
By the same token, Americans were just 5 points more likely back in January — right after the GOP spent 15 tortured, tumultuous rounds of voting trying (and eventually, just barely managing) to elect former Speaker Kevin McCarthy — to blame Republicans (39%) rather than Democrats (34%) “the most” for D.C.’s ongoing paralysis.
Today, that gap has doubled to 10 points, with 42% of Americans now blaming Republicans the most versus just 32% blaming Democrats.
Too close IMO.
Republicans lukewarm on potential McCarthy replacements
Internally, there is little consensus among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents about who should replace the ousted McCarthy.
Less than half (41%) say Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the hard-line co-founder of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump....
... Yet there are signs that the GOP’s seemingly endless speaker drama has not been good for its brand. A full 63% of registered voters now say the GOP isn’t “paying enough attention to America’s real problems,” up from 59% in January, while even more say Republicans are more interested in scoring political points (64%) than passing legislation (22%). That 42-point margin is twice as large as the corresponding gap on the Democratic side (55% scoring political points, 34% passing legislation)....
It's not surprising that so many people are willing to blame both parties, despite the clear evidence otherwise. It's way too easy to say "oh, politicians are all the same bunch of crooks." And sure, that's the comment of the uninformed, but too often the Dems don't do enough to distinguish themselves. Double down and "Don't choke."

Isn't it totally flabbergasting that out of more than 200 Repugs in Congress they can't come up with better than this? "Better" has such a ridiculously low bar:
1. Understand that your job is to help run the government, not intentionally screw it up.
2. Understand that negotiation and compromise is the only way things get accomplished - whether among your own party or with the other party.
3. Remain focused on issues of importance to the country and those you ummmm "represent."
4. Accept the result of a demonstrably and proven fail election.
You are speaking of the party of trump. All bets are off.
OKfine - I'll settle for just #1.
1. Understand that your job is to help run the government, not intentionally screw it up get reelected at all costs and nothing else matters even if you screw up the country or imperil democracy.
FTFY.

Thanks, but I think that most of the longest tenure (most times re-elected) congresscritters were not, with some notable exceptions, usually extremists and certain not boeberts.

As you said.
But apparently there's a new dictionary we're not aware of that redefines governing.

I read a comment that said it appears the US now has a three-party system where coalitions will be necessary.
Maybe not so wrong and not by design.
Yeah I think overall it's a good idea, but it'll require a steep learning curve - for some more than others. And of course the root of the entire problem is that the far right forgets it's not really a majority.

Understatement.
But they seem to think they've got momentum on their side when in reality it's waning. That's not to say it's going to vanish and all they can do in reality is obstruct.
The third party that evolves may just be centrist out of necessity. They can call it the Compromise party or Half A Loaf (HAL) party. Nobody really wins, nobody really loses (and everyone can claim victory) and the country can actually plod forward with much less drama.
New slogan

So seriously - why isn't Jeffries meeting with, say, Emmer, at some cozy dive and say something like "You know we have a great opportunity here. Gaetz and his buddies are clearly as much a pain in your ass as ours and on a more important note they're doing major and maybe unfixable damage to the US. We have the opportunity to cut these guys off at the knees. We've got 212 people and can rely on pretty much all of them to support a good plan. If you can come up with more than 5 votes, we'll neuter the bastards. Republicans won the majority, and you can be Speaker. We want five commitments from you: (1) no threats to shut down the government; (2) no impeachment; (3) Gaetz gets expelled; (4) revoke the "one man to recall" rule; (5) our issues get brought up for a vote.
Your 5 guys could be some who aren't running in '24. Or they could be some who are in districts Biden won in 20 and think they can win again. Either way, they'll be heroes to most Americans.
You (Emmer) and I (Jeffries) will work closely together to bring legislation that get passed. It won't make any difference how loud the "Freedom Caucus" people scream. They won't be able to stop anything.

The options at the moment, including Emmer, all suck. viewtopic.php?p=190883#p190883
However, maybe your scheme is the way to go, with the Dems choosing the least odious to have that beer with.
Yeah Emmer is no catch particularly, but I just picked hime because he's majority whip. There are probably some backbenchers that are better ans less looney but I think they'd have to start with somebody in leadership. The other approach would be to go hunting for potential flippers in their own but that would be risky.
