Trump on Trial

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

So it's Sunday. How many more times/weeks are we going to hear about Trump's "increasing legal peril" and that further indictments could "come any day"?
Oh goody, it's over now:

Fresh charges tie Trump even more closely to coverup effort. That could deepen his legal woes
New allegations in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump deepen his legal jeopardy as he braces for possible additional indictments related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election

Consider:
Lyndon Johnson was a skilled politician who at one time was highly popular because of his picking up the reins after JFK was killed. He got significant worthwhile legislation passed, but was functionally run out of office because of his conduct of the Vietnam war. He retired to his ranch on the Pedernales and was rarely in the news thereafter until his death at age 64.

Spiro Agnew was VP under Nixon and did very little other than to serve as the anti-news media barking dog. He was forced to resign over bribes and kickbacks he took prior to office when he was Baltimore County executive and Governor of Maryland. He skulked off and tried various business enterprises but was mostly never heard from publicly again.

Richard Nixon served two terms as VP and most of two terms as President, with notable achievements, excluding his getting more people killed and more money spent on Vietnam than the rest combined, but was run out of office on what today would be little more than a political party foul. He skulked off to San Clemente and kept a low profile until he died.

Jimmy Carter was a good person whose Presidency was harmed by circumstances out of his control, but he was trashed in being denied a second term largely because of the unfortunately poor handling of the Iran hostage situation. He retired to Plains and spent the rest of his life in volunteer and public service and was rarely in the news thereafter.

Bush the Elder was a reasonably decent (for a Repug) President who was summarily dumped from office largely because of his reneging on his "read my lips no new taxes" pledge. He retired to Kennebunkport and Texas and was rarely in the news thereafter.

Trump admitted to sexual assault and tax evasion prior to being elected, wreaked havoc with many long-term policies and practices, ruined the economy, lied constantly and was run out of office after one term. He's been first accused and since indicted for multiple serious crimes and found responsible in court for rape. Yet three years after leaving office, he not only dominates the news, but maintains a grip of support on the majority of what passes for the Repug party and is leading for re-nomination.

The US gone and will never be back.

:headscratch: Jimmy mostly shunned domestic politics, but he was frequently in the news for Habitat, etc, and for international election monitoring and other promotion of democracy. It's because of this very public profile that he's our best ex-POTUS ever.

You didn't mention:
Bill Clinton - Was very politically active for awhile, and did major relief work with Daddy Shrub.
Baby Shrub - Followed your STFU Rx, mostly.
Obama - Pretty politically active.

Yeah, I just felt like a mini-rant over the stark difference between Trump and any other President in recent history. Up until he actually got elected, somebody like Trump couldn't have gotten elected to practically any city council, and certainly couldn't have kept their job for 4 years. Literally hundreds of politicians have been run out on rails for any one or two of Trump's even minor or medium level transgressions. Wish I liked winter a bit better - I'd be a permanent Canadian in a heartbeat.

TRE45QN didn't really win in 2016:
3M fewer votes
Campaign finance felonies
Significant illegal Russian assistance
Certain, but unproven, collusion with the Russians

:happy-cheerleaderkid:

Read the article:

Trump charged by Justice Department for efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss

Idk about relative odds of success, but this is the indictment that matters most to me. GoJackGo!

Not Florida, not Trumpette Loose Cannon.
Tanya Sue Chutkan (born July 5, 1962) is a Jamaican American lawyer and jurist from Washington, D.C. She is a United States district judge in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, serving since 2014 (appointed by Barack Obama). She is the judge overseeing the criminal trial of former U.S. president Donald J. Trump over the events leading up to the January 6, 2021, United States Capitol attack.

Jah rules, mon! The US DC Court has convicted hundreds of J6 terrorists.

Can't wait for dump's reaction.

Campaign says, ""The answer is, election interference!" the statement said.

The campaign stated that "President Trump has always followed the law and the Constitution, with advice from many highly accomplished attorneys."'

I think the "undicted co-conspirators" refer to those who flipped and are now also referred to as "canaries"

Not this time, the talking heads are speculating that they've yet to be indicted because they don't want to muck up a trial date for trump and it gives them more time to try and flip them.

Should be interesting, most if not all the witnesses against trump will be Republicans and the stars will be Mike Pence and Mark Meadows.
