Nobody has tried to charge Trump for his handling of documents when he was President*. Handling is not the main issue: possession after he was tossed from office is the issue.

If Trump were actually entitled to those documents in his bathroom, and if he had any capable lawyers, they'd write a speech for him to read word for word that cited that "law that was passed". Even when presented with an opportunity to be right and tell the truth, he's wrong and lies.

I've been layman impressed with how thorough and prepared Jack Smith's office seems to be. If Cannon screws the pooch enough it won't surprise me to see a motion to have her removed.
