Trump on Trial

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

... Why it matters: She is the first of Trump's inner circle to enter a guilty plea and admit to crimes in connection with subverting 2020 election results.

Driving the news: Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor charges relating to efforts to interfere with the 2020 election and agreed to testify against co-defendants in the case.
Roll Baby Roll!
* Fulton County prosecutors recommended Powell receive six years of probation and a $6,000 fine, in addition to paying $2,700 in restitution.
* Under the terms of the deal, she is also required to write an apology letter to the citizens of Georgia.

The big picture: Powell helped spread baseless conspiracy theories about ballot fraud in the days after the 2020 election.

* She was indicted earlier this year along with former President Trump and 17 others in the sprawling criminal racketeering case.
* Her initial charges included violating Georgia's racketeering law and conspiracy to commit election fraud as part of the scheme to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election.
* She is the second defendant to accept a plea deal in the case. Scott Hall, a bail bondsman, pleaded guilty to charges against him last month.
I would have preferred at least one felony conviction even if the sentence recommendation remained the same. She should never again be allowed to inflict her practice of law on anyone. Maybe she'll get disbarred, anyhow?
What we're watching: The trial for attorney Kenneth Chesebro is set to begin on Friday with jury selection.

* Chesebro, an attorney, helped devise the plan to "submit fraudulent slates of presidential electors" to Congress, according to the indictment.
Lock him up.

I'm gonna need a spread sheet of what trials are going on where.

I would have guessed, but didn't find one for Chesebro in a brief search.

Powell was supposed to stand trial with Chesebro this week. I wonder if he feels hung out to dry.

Searching "trump conviction betting line" I found a bunch of links for impeachment, indictment and election odds, but only these for conviction odds:

June
What Are Donald Trump’s Odds Of Serving Jail Time Before 2026?

... According to the above prop, Trump has a 2-in-3 chance of being found guilty. Will the conviction result in any jail time? Not likely, as the next two political prop bets will illustrate....

August
Trump Odds For Election Tampering Charges In Georgia Imply 11-13 Guilty Counts

... Trump Georgia Arraignment Special

Fulton County Sheriff To Release A Mugshot Of Trump Smiling +200
Fulton County Sheriff To Release A Mugshot Of Trump Wearing A MAGA Cap +2500
Trump To Be Handcuffed During The Arraignment +125
Bovada

Will Trump Smile Or Smirk For GA Mugshot

Not Smiling/Smirking -550
Smiling/Smirking +325
BetOnline AG

These political prop bets imply an outcome where Trump neither smiles nor smirks for his official mugshot. There is a strong potential for him to be wearing handcuffs while being photographed, but he is a longshot to be wearing a red ballcap emblazoned with his campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
He neither smiled nor smirked, was not cuffed and did not wear a cap.
Trump earned the nickname “Teflon Don” by avoiding any legal hurdles placed in front of him. Has his luck run out? The following betting odds suggest so.
Number Of Guilty Counts For Trump In Georgia

0-2 Counts +300, +300
3-10 Counts +350, +500
11-13 Counts -265, -250
BetUS/BetOnline

The original “Teflon Don” nickname was given to mobster John Gotti. In 1992, Gotti was convicted of conspiracy to murder and a number of other charges. He was sent to prison, where he died of throat cancer in 1998.

The current political indictment odds suggest that Trump will be found guilty of between eleven and thirteen counts levied against him in GA. His -250 moneyline odds imply a 71% likelihood of being found guilty of at least eleven charges.

Joe Biden+160
Donald Trump Sr.+225
Gavin Newsom+1200

Should Trump earn the Republican Party’s 2024 nomination, he has a fighting chance of retaining the Oval Office. He is only separated from incumbent Joe Biden by 65 points in the moneyline odds.

Trump has overcome much larger deficits in the past, so don’t count him out for the 2024 election or to beat the rap in all four of his current indictments.

Well, hominy, I don't know if she still does, but this crazy woman used to live in Biltmore Forest. If I were still down there, we could go and drive by her house or even knock on the door and ask if she'd like to come out and have a chat. We could tell her that if she'd hung around with us instead of those nutjobs, she'd not be out thousands of dollars and that she'd not be nationally known as a dipshit. And we would be sure to point out that all that would have been free. I'd love to have a face to face with this idioti.

I wonder what good Sidney Powell's testimony can be. She's a thoroughly documented moron, liar and nutcase. Any defense attorney should be able to successfully impeach her credibility. I did hear something about turning over docs she's retained. Those could be very useful to Fani and other prosecutors.

Yeah, she's a nutcase if she actually believed the bullshit she spread. But if that's part of the plan of spreading dissention in support of the overall "stolen election" strategy, then she's not a nutcase. Poor judgement, step-on-own-dick level of stupid, for ever getting involved with Trump, but neither moron nor nutcase. And being under oath on the witness stand with your freedom and possibly your law licence on the line isn't exactly the same as spouting red meat for the rubes.

And she was there. Sitting in meetings. Listening to the other traitors.

She's definitely got value

Were the Sydney and Chesebro speedy trial demands head fakes all along in order to wrest the best plea deals they could? Whatever, this is great news for Fani. She was forced to prep for trial today and can now coast a bit into the actual Spring trials. Plus, she's now 3-0 including Georgia-based bail bondsman Scott Hall, which has to be a confidence boost. The P01135809 Mob is going down bit by bit!

CNN article:
... Chesebro pleaded guilty to one felony – conspiracy to commit filing false documents. Fulton County prosecutors recommended that he serve 5 years of probation and pay $5,000 in restitution, and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee imposed that sentence at Friday’s hearing.
Some prison would have been nice, along with tens of thousands in fines and restitution. I hope there's good value in:
Chesebro has also agreed to testify in future court proceedings.

As part of his plea deal, Chesebro admitted that he conspired to put forward fake GOP electors in Georgia with Trump and former Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman. Giuliani and Eastman have both pleaded not guilty in the Georgia case, and now face the prospect of Chesebro taking the witness stand against them.

The plea came shortly after jury selection in the trial began Friday morning as planned, but was short-lived. A source familiar with the discussions said the likelihood of Chesebro taking a deal increased after Powell made a surprise turn and pleaded guilty on Thursday.

... Powell was supposed to stand trial with Chesebro this week. I wonder if he feels hung out to dry....
... Ahead of their scheduled trial, Chesebro and Powell lost several bids to get the case thrown out, including earlier this week. In a spate of pretrial rulings, McAfee rejected their arguments that Fulton County prosecutors misapplied Georgia’s RICO law and that the indictment failed to establish key elements of the crimes that have been charged.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee rocks!
... CNN overheard a court official reading aloud from portions the jury questionnaire in a public area of the courthouse where the jury selection process was taking place. The questionnaire itself has not been made public.

The potential jurors were asked if they “express divisive political opinions,” if they ever attended a Trump rally or any “MAGA events,” or posted anything online about “Donald Trump’s charges.”

They were also asked specifically if they watched the highly publicized January 6 committee hearings last year, which presented in dramatic fashion how Trump tried to overturn the election....
If given the chance I would lie my ass off in order to sit on the jury. :shhh:

Trump legal news brief: Trump hit with partial gag order after he attacks judge's clerk

Might a contempt citation put P01135809 in jail sooner than anyone predicted? Fingers crossed. Or, would Judge Arthur Engoron (bio) stick to fines?
Rich people always get fines, don't they?
-0-? I see contempt enforced on TV shows more than irl, not counting journalists who refuse to reveal sources. Jail would be an effective form of ending the hateful spewing, though.
It begins:
Judge fines Donald Trump $5,000 after post maligning court staffer is found on campaign website

Former President Donald Trump was fined $5,000 on Friday after his disparaging social media post about a key court staffer in his New York civil fraud trial lingered on his campaign website for weeks after the judge ordered it deleted.

Judge Arthur Engoron avoided holding Trump in contempt for now, but reserved the right to do so — and possibly even put the 2024 Republican front-runner in jail — if he again violates a limited gag order barring case participants from personal attacks on court staff.

Engoron said in a written ruling that he is "way beyond the ‘warning’ stage," but that he was only fining Trump a nominal amount because this was a “first time violation” and Trump’s lawyers said the website’s retention of the post had been inadvertent.

“Make no mistake: future violations, whether intentional or unintentional, will subject the violator to far more severe sanctions, which may include steeper financial penalties, holding Donald Trump in contempt of court, and possibly imprisoning him,” Engoron wrote in a two-page order....

New York law allows judges to impose fines or imprisonment as punishment for contempt. Last year, Engoron held Trump in contempt and fined him $110,000 for being slow to respond to a subpoena in the investigation that led to the lawsuit....
There must be thousands of netizens pouring over TRE45QN's campaign website and social media searching for further violations.
:---P Escalate escalate escalate, lock him up!

So if you're one of the remaining 17 co-defendants, you're not really a stupid person - except for getting involved with Trump - and you've probably got a lawyer who passed the bar somewhere, or you may be a lawyer yourself. You see these two that rolled over, took a plea, and got pretty much a hand slap. You know, when you look at yourself in the mirror, that if you go to trial, you're gonna get convicted - and not just of the watered-down charges Kraken and Cheesehead got away with. And you know you're not gonna get any suspended sentence/probation - your ass is going to some Georgia rat hole and even if it's a "minimum security" place it's gonna screw up your life. You know what you did, and you know that Fani knows and can prove it. And you know that your fellow defendants know and some of them are gonna rat on you.

What possible incentive is there for any of them to hang around for trial? Even if they want to play the long shot that Trump gets to office and pardons you, you'll probably lose whatever job you have, your professional licence if you have one, and probably your wife/family for being so stupid as to hang with Trump.

I've given a reasonable amount of thought, and seriously, I can't come up with any practical reason for not rolling over as soon as I could get my lawyer to call Fani.

Most probably will, but I don't think there's any more Georgia trials scheduled until spring so they may take a little time to try and get the best deals they can.....if it doesn't backfire.

They really aren't holding good hands.
