On Valentine’s Day weekend in 2004, the vice president first performed same-sex marriages as San Francisco district attorney. The Advocate spoke exclusively to a gay couple she married.
Twenty years have passed since Vice President Kamala Harris, then serving as the district attorney of San Francisco, took a bold step in officiating some of the nation’s first same-sex marriages. That historic act defied legal restrictions and marked a pivotal moment in the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights.
In a heartwarming video call earlier this week, to which The Advocate was granted access, Harris reconnected with Bradley Witherspoon and Raymond Cobane to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their marriage—a union she officiated, after Gavin Newsom, then San Francisco’s mayor, declared marriage equality in the city. Although the marriages were later nullified by court action, the march toward equal rights wasn’t over.
GOBradley, Raymond, and historic Kamala and GavinGO!
Kamala vs Gavin in 2028? Who would have predicted that in 2004? Gay Mayor Pete, too? Could be. AOC?
... Throughout her career, Harris has been an unwavering ally of the LGBTQ+ community, from creating one of the nation’s first LGBTQ+ hate crimes units as district attorney in San Francisco to refusing to defend Proposition 8 as California’s attorney general. Her efforts have contributed significantly to the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights, highlighted by her crucial role in reestablishing marriage equality in California....
More than 71 percent of Americans now support the right of same-sex couples to get married, according to a 2023 Gallup poll....
... “She is courtroom tough,” he said of Harris, who was a former prosecutor. “She has a big heart. And she is battle-tested and ready to go.”
At one point, Shapiro said he was committed to what he calls “GSD.”
“I focus on gettin’ shit done for all of you!” he said to cheers.
Shapiro also mentioned JD Vance, Trump’s running mate who has been consistently mocked for his bizarre comments and behavior.
“JD Vance, he’s not exactly off to a good start, I think we can all agree on that,” Shapiro said. “But I think part of the reason ― and it’s serious ― is he doesn’t know who he is, and he’s not being honest with himself, so he can’t be honest with the American people. He can’t.”
Before Shapiro could continue, the crowd roared into chants of “He’s a weirdo!”
“So if I hear you right, and I think I do, you’re chanting, ‘He’s a weirdo,’” Shapiro clarified.
... “She’s so good-looking, she’s so smart, she’s so wealthy, she’s so funny, she’s close to her mom, she goes on really cool vacations, she’ll never break your heart,” she added mockingly.
...
Translation: we can't stick to one line of attack because we've got nothin'
“…and all the boys wanna marry her and all the girls wanna BE her…”
Don’t threaten us with a good time, Kellyanne!
Kellyanne is giving off some major “jealous sophomore” energy here.
... And there’s one group that reveals Harris’ distinctive mark on the race: women. She didn’t simply make gains among young and nonwhite voters; she made outsize gains among young women.
Overall, Harris gained 11 points compared with Biden among women while she improved just 3 points among men.
The shift among women is broad and includes nearly every demographic group, including older white women and white women without a college degree....
... Harris’ worst group is somewhat conservative voters. No, Biden wasn’t winning many conservatives, but his moderate political orientation gave him a path to peeling away a sliver of Trump-skeptical conservative-leaning voters. Harris, who ran to the left in her 2020 campaign, does not have that same appeal, at least not yet.
One group stands out for not being a relative strength for Harris: nonwhite voters over 45. Biden held his own among these voters and still held around 70% of their votes in our last round of Times/Siena polls. Harris didn’t seem to gain much among this more loyal group of Democrats, even as she made big gains among younger nonwhite voters.
But perhaps the most telling area of weakness of all for Harris is among white men. Although she made outsize gains among women and nonwhite voters, white men barely budged at all. And white men over 65 — a level of granularity not included in the table — actually shifted 6 points toward Trump....
The Harris family then lived in several college towns in the Upper Midwest: Urbana, Illinois, where a sister, Maya was born in 1966; Evanston, Illinois; and Madison, Wisconsin, the parents holding teaching or research positions

In what counts as one of the bizarre attacks of this year’s presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, stands accused of wrongly characterizing herself as a “daughter of Oakland.” According to an investigative report in The New York Times, Harris was born in the adjacent Berkeley, California.
Jesse Watters at Fox News went so far as to hold up Harris’ birth certificate with that Berkeley home address listed. As awful as that was, Watters using Harris’ birth certificate as some kind of gotcha was not only a reminder of the “birther” attacks on President Barack Obama, but it also revealed what this inquisition is really about: portraying Harris as sneaky, inauthentic and unworthy of trust....
I lived on the border. They were indistinguishable unless there was a rare city border sign. Other than city pols their politics were inseparable. There was no rivalry or resentment that I perceived. As the article says:
... By all indications, Oakland loves Harris and claims her back and doesn’t care where she went to primary school. Republicans who profess to be upset about it are, in keeping with Trump’s insulting attack on her identity, suggesting that she is falsely trying to claim Blackness. When she’s only doing what all politicians do: naming a place of origin that signals her politics. Yes, Harris gains bona fides from being associated with a city that symbolizes Black working class grit and activism, and not the image of white elitism and radicalism associated with San Francisco but especially Berkeley.
But JD Vance made a name for himself by highlighting his Appalachian roots and using that to illustrate how far he’s come even though Appalachia isn’t where he’s actually from....
They're in a cult whose leader knows only LAW (Lying And Whining). If they're noy lying abotu something, they're whining about something. This always will depend on what the cult leader is doing at any given moment. But you can bet your ass that it'll be one or the other. Always.

Riiiiight, because so many escort clients want to discuss politics MAGAts are SO freakin' gullible.
Fwiw I would still vote for escort Kamala over the Florida pig. He is the one who has already fucked us.
Damn right.....in MAGA land, no one is above the LAW (Lying And Whining). My current favorite LAW is J.D. Vance saying "the left" needs to "tone down the rhetoric" in an effort to connect trump's two assassins' actions to things Democrats say, as if quoting trump's own words is somehow to blame for the attempts on his life. Hilarious.

Just Deranged needs to have his ass kicked by someone like:
Well I think I know why some of the fence-sitters are saying they "want to know more specifics" about Harris' policies. They've all gotten used to people making sweeping "promises" without regard as to whether they have any chance of actually doing it. Trump is maybe worst. He'll get up in front of a crowd and make up "day one" stuff based on whatever the crowd might like to hear. "You guys vape? We'll give vapes out free." "And we won't tax overtime or tips and everybody gets a tax cut." Yada
On a local level, we've got a guy running for Mike Levin's seat who:
Doesn't really say he's a repug
Claims to be "pro-choice" despite having high ratings from the anti-abortion groups
Says he "has a plan" to reduce inflation, but doesn't tell us what it involves
Says he'll "secure the border" (all by himself, I guess), and
Says "California taxes are too high" (nevermind that the congresscritter job he's after has nothing whatsoever to do with California taxes
And we've got a woman running for state legislature who:
Promises to "Stop Newsom's gas tax" (Ok, so, um there are how many are in the state Assembly? 80? and how many of those are repugs? 17 on a good day? Exactly how to you plan to "stop" anything?)
We've got another who promises to "make housing affordable" and "solve the homeless problem"
So yeah, if Kamala wants to satisfy those people she's gonna have to go for Big Rock Candy Mountain
