WNBA

Thread separating out the pro women.

Caitlin Clark was firing on all cylinders Friday night.

The Indiana Fever rookie and #1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft finished Friday's 85-82 win over the Washington Mystics with 30 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. She also shot an insane 7 of 13 from three point range.

It was a new career best for Clark in terms of scoring. Yet, the rookie is surely more excited about her team winning their third game of the season, as opposed to anything she did individually....
Nice, hitting her groove? Team hitting its groove?

Clark left off the Olympic team. Some people aren't happy:

Caitlin Clark snubbed from Olympics: Why is Team USA making this mistake?

-0-? I'll be less likely to watch.

Whatever the process, I don't believe it could be called "thinking" at all.
Caitlin is the face of women's' basketball, and the others, such as Angel Reese would still be known mostly only to their families if it weren't for Caitlin. And if Caitlin isn't there, nobody is going to care about the games. (maybe we could make a slogan ")

I don't know if I'll watch the women's basketball this summer Olympics and don't even know if it will be on tv when I'm watching. But I know who I'll root for: that would be Canada and anybody playing the US team.

Caitlin will be rooting for the US team.

Why Caitlin Clark might still play for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics

That makes the snub a little more understandable. TV news says Caitlin's been named the first alternate.

Fans absolutely loved Caitlin Clark's classy response to getting left off Team USA's Olympic squad

She's the only one that's been acting normal about any of this stuff since the season started.
Seems to be built for this level of spotlight and scrutiny. She’s just been 100% normal through all of this.
As good as Caitlin Clark is on the court, she crushes her media sessions. Class and grace personified.
This may have won me over. Even if she lying, this is how you play the game and respond to this, ESPECIALLY mentioning that other women got the same call to not be on the team. #wbb #wnba
And that’s how you answer that
I agree

Caitlin handled the issue with grace and class. I, on the other hand, can be bitter if I want to.

 Caitlin has $2M in endorsement deals riding on that grace and class. We don't.

Not everyone may be like me, but I'm sure I'm not all that unusual in that the only WNBA player I could name before Caitlin was Britney Griner and that's because she was bagged by the Russians. I don't think I could have named the WNBA teams or locations. I think I knew that UConn was a womens basketball power, but didn't know any players. I don't know that I could find wherever University of Iowa is with a GPS. But suddenly there's Caitlin - giving us a face, a personality, a story - a reason to be interested in the games and the players.

So maybe Caitlin is just a talented rookie; maybe she's not yet in the top 12 pro players, but she's already done a lot for that league - more in some ways than any of the other 12, and she deserves a spot on the national team.

Makes sense.

Caitlin Clark's boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, "took a job on the coaching staff of the NBA's Indiana Pacers as a team assistant in May 2023."

Pretty fortuitous that she got drafted by the Fever a year later.

Rooting for or predicting that his local team would suck the worst?

C. Clark G - IND
23PTS, 7/11FG, 6/6FT
9AST, 5TO - Has she finally got that ratio fixed?

Her first back-to-back wins, a streak! The 5-10 Fever have now climbed to only 3rd worst in the Eastern Conference, better than 4-9 Chicago and lowly Washington. That's something.

Ugly. Good on the refs. Clark sunk the FTs. If the Fever scored on the possession they were also awarded that's half the 8-point final margin in one dirty play. Ouch.

Shocker. Angelo Reese and the Sky doing Angel Reese and Sky stuff. By the way Caitlin is cooking them. #caitlinclark
Ouch.

Angel Reese says Caitlin Clark gets 'special whistle.' It blew after Reese's blow to Clark's head

:crybaby: Otoh:
... During her postgame news conference, Clark was asked what she was thinking after the foul.

“What’s going through my mind? It’s, ‘I’m gonna make these two free throws.’ That’s all I’m thinking about," said Clark, who finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. "It's just part of basketball. It is what it is, you know, she’s trying to make a play on the ball and get the block. It happens.”

... "I think it's just the emotion and the passion that we play with," Clark said in response to a question about why people seem drawn to her rivalry with Reese. "I think people love to see that. And I think that's maybe not something that was always appreciated in women's sports, and it should be. I think that's what makes it fun.

"We're competitors. That's the way the game should be. It's going to get a little feisty. It's going to get physical. But at the end of the day, both teams are just trying to win."
Classy.

At the risk of invoking biting criticism from some corners, I might point out that most of the WNBA players could be described as "Black women with attitudes" and that from some reports about half the players are lesbians. It would be shocking if there weren't some excess drama.
