Was the Atomic Bomb Justified? A Controversial Debate
The Ethical Dilemma of the Atomic Bomb

There's lots more out there if one googles something like "Was the atomic bombing of japan justifiable?" It's an 80 year old debate and I'm not going to try and settle it here. I'm just saying that there's a credible alternative view out there and people will seize on different elements of the historical record to justify their side.

Personally, I oppose the deliberate or indifferent mass targeting of civilians, whether by firebomb, drone or nuke, and whether it's Japan, Dresden, Gaza or at the Gaza border on Oct 7, Ukraine, WTC, Haiphong, etc.

At the time, and even prior to the initial test, even the physicists were not sure what would happen. Some believed it would set off an uncontrollable chain reaction in the atmosphere. Once that didn't happen, they went ahead. I'm not advocating for or defending use of nuclear weapons, then or now. I even felt a sense of shame and guilt while at Nagasaki Peace Park, even more so since as far as I could tell, I was the only American around.
I would probably feel the same. I was working when I was in Japan. No chance to get away from port. Not on many 'Must see' lists for tourists. Even then, I'll bet more go to Hiroshima than Nagasaki.

I was also "working" all the time I was in Japan but unless I had duty (there were four in port duty sections, meaning that once every four days in port I'd have to stay on the ship for that 24 hours) but many times I had weekends for myself. I don't even remember how I got to Nagasaki. I know I didn't ride my motorbike there and I know I was alone. I must have rode the train. I do still have the photos I took while there.

Our schedule wasn't so sweet. Usually 8 hours M-F, 4 hours Sat - all depending on departures. Not really enough time to go anywhere. Shame that you couldn't find any crewmates to join you.

I visited Dachau alone. It's best to share such powerful experiences.

I'm assuming your ship did not have a crew of about 130. Some of us had to stand watch underway depending on what their job was. I only had to stand watch in port....for four hours standing on the quarterdeck with a white watch belt, holster, and .45 Colt Commander pistol. The two clips for the pistol were in a pouch opposite the holster. I always thought it was stupid to stand an armed watch with an unloaded weapon. Had anyone tried to come aboard who wasn't supposed to, I'd certainly be at a disadvantage if the intruder already had his gun out. But the OOD could announce and "intruder alert" which would result in half a dozen or more guys with sawed off shotguns running around. Meanwhile I'd likely be dead first.

I honestly don't remember how I came to go to the Nagasaki Peach Park. It's several hundred miles from Yokosuka where the ship was. But I do remember feeling a sense of shame or something while there. It was a sobering experience. I used to visit Japanese temples now and then but they were close to the naval base. Some of them were like 900 years old. A lot of cemetery headstones had a swastika symbol on them. I came to find that it's actually a religious symbol long predating Nazi Germany.

Usually 12-15 crew, depending.

Hey, someone has to find out if the intruder's gun is loaded. Thank you for your service. :-||

"So many toys were left over from the giveaway that community leaders were able to fill cars with them to take to families who couldn't make it that day. They spent the last week delivering them. They even had enough to send some to Senegal and Guatemala, turning the local gift giving effort into an international one."

So much Christmas spirit in this story.

Easter? Let''s give it a try......

Our father high in heaven, smile down upon your son
Whose busy with his money games, his women, and his guns
Oh, Jesus save me

And the unsung Western hero, killed an Indian or three,
And then he made his name in Hollywood
To set the white man free
Oh, Jesus save me

If Jesus saves, he better save himself
From the gory glory seekers who use his name in death
Oh, Jesus save me

Well I saw him in the city and on the mountains of the moon
His cross was rather bloody
He could hardly roll his stone
Oh, Jesus save me

Hymn 43 - Jethro Tull
Good choice as we're engaged in yet another unexplained, illegal, unpopular and unjustified war.

Jethro Tull Hymn 43 1977

another Tulletti project by me with the footage of a TV broadcast of tull playing in the London Hippodrome in 1977 synced up to the audio of Hymn 43 from the tull 1971 album 'Aqualung'.

Enjoy!
I saw them from nearly the front row on March 6, 1977, Songs From the Wood Tour. Great show! Good comments. One laments:
How can they and Ian not be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?! GOAT!
Idk about "GOAT", but I agree that it's a travesty that they haven't been inducted.

Happy Easter hominy and everyone else. I hope your baskets are full of psychedelic eggs.
