2026 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Political ads weren't always so scorchingly negative. But LBJ had great response from his "Daisy" ad portraying Goldwater as a nuclear bomber, and Bush's "Willie Horton" ad probably had effects long past just the campaign. Sexual assault has been a pretty successful tact lately, so we can expect a bunch in the next few months. And as everybody gets used to them, they'll get more sordid and probably gruesome.

Good, but not so recent article to negative ads here:

What else should we expect from fellow swamp dwellers?

Gotta hand it to Swalwell for being transparent about his actions - raping somebody at a press conference is pretty brazen.
A woman named Lonna Drewes accused Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) of drugging and raping her during a press conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, adding to the weighty allegations of sexual misconduct against the California Democrat.

This is ridiculous. We got our "Primary Election Guide" brochure - a booklet of 63 pages - and apparently most anybody can run for office. There are 62 people on the ballot for Governor and 16 for Lieutenant Governor. Some of the ummm, "candidates" include: LivingForGodAndCountry Demott, Lukasz Finiski, Barack D. Obama Shaw, Thunder Parley, Zez Zezulak, Dusty Beach, and Brett Marymee. A lot of these claim Dem or no party preference, but we've also got Green Party, Peace and Freedom Party, and a few that were just made up and "not qualified party." Many are single issue people. Most you'll never hear their name outside of seeing it on the ballot.

Whoever thought this system up should be banished to Mississippi or somewhere.

Could be worse. I've been watching Whack9's primary ads  . The Dems aren't even bothering.

Opps: At least Orbán lost.

Virginia Voters Just Gave Democrats A Clearer Path To Winning The Midterms
The referendum should result in the state electing 10 Democrats and just a single Republican to Congress.

Virginia voters approved a congressional map on Tuesday that is likely to create four additional Democratic seats in Congress, handing the party a major win in the ongoing redistricting wars.

The victory also showed that the Democrats’ rank-and-file was willing to put aside cherished good-government principles to battle President Donald Trump, creating a gerrymandered map that includes 10 districts likely to elect a Democrat to the U.S. House and just one, located in the state’s conservative southwest, likely to back a Republican. The existing delegation consists of six Democrats and five Republicans.

The new maps would gerrymander the state to create 10 districts likely to elect a Democrat to the U.S. House and just one, located in the state’s conservative southwest, likely to back a Republican.
:---P Fuck off, DonOLD, RAbbott and Fascist DeSantis. CA and VA did this by democratic referenda not impositions by the Legs.
... It was the latest round of mid-decade redistricting provoked by Trump’s push to have Republicans redraw lines to eliminate Democratic-held seats in red states, including Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri and potentially Florida. Democrats have responded by drawing new maps in California and, now, Virginia.

The lead for “yes” was relatively narrow as of 10 p.m. on Tuesday, at 51.3% of the vote compared with 48.7% for a “no” vote against approving the maps, showing how Republicans managed to wake up their lethargic base.
Close only counts in horseshoes and thermonuclear weapons. Elections have consequences. :P
... “Maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement celebrating the victory. A nonprofit closely affiliated with Jeffries was the leading funder of the “yes” effort.
:---P
Depending on what happens in Florida, where GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to call a special session to draw a new map next week, Democrats could now come out ahead in the redistricting wars. The party looks set to gain as many as 10 seats, compared to a maximum of eight for the GOP....

Well, he's not wrong but this wouldn't do anything to turn it around.

Additionally, this might damage his base as much or more than dems.

But, whatever. Ain't gonna happen.

Based on the little detail out there it seems it may be a staff issue. Edwards would be wise to be as forthcoming as possible. The folks here in western NC will not tolerate a confirmed sexual harassment incident involving Edwards. We can ditch reps. See Cawthorn.

Another good reason why whoever thought up the "open" California primary election system should be buried up to his neck in an ant bed.
A "candidate" statement from the official Primary Voter Guide:

He narrowly lost in a primary. There are few nasty things a RepuQ could do to get NC11 Cultists to vote Dem in the general. Ask SoupySales what it would take for him.

US Rep. Chuck Edwards may be continuing a "proud" NC11 tradition of FAILURE.

Chainsaw Charly Taylor
Blue Dog carpet bagger Heath Shuler
Democracy-hating Mark Meadows
MadCaw
Now Chuck Edwards?

I get that NC11 is con and there's nothing I can do about it, but why do we pick such absolutely rotten Reps?

Well maybe not, but they guy is still a drooling loon. How many of those issues he's interested in would be under authority of a state governor?

I can't imagine right now. But, in politics strange things happen. I would not have voted for a second Cawthorn term.

It seems the "traditional" NC Congress critter was generally center to center-righr, and was Dem. And the Democratic party had a big tent. Well, the Dem candidates are still fairly traditional conservative but the Repugs have gotten way off the rez.

:headscratch: Maybe in your A'ville district. In NC11 Chainsaw Charly Taylor (R) held court from 1991 to 2007. Blue Dog Heath Shuler's 2 terms have been the only exception to GQP dominance.

Yeah, but I wasn't thinking about just WNC. Dems were in majority for a long time.
