The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Likely the only instrumental ever banned from the radio.

An article about Jesse Ed Davis led to Link Wray and the Wraymen and then to the song Rumble

faroutmagazine.co.uk
The forgotten guitar hero loved by John Lennon and Bob Dylan
"Everyone wanted to play with Jesse."
faroutmagazine.co.uk faroutmagazine.co.uk

And then on to the movie The Rumble (Netflix).

Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World (2017) - IMDb
Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World: Directed by Catherine Bainbridge, Alfonso Maiorana. With Link Wray, Stevie Salas, Taylor Hawkins, Wayne Kramer. A documentary about the role of Native Americans in popular music history.
m.imdb.com m.imdb.com

Excellent documentary tells more than I ever imagined about the roots of rock, blues and jazz being Native American.

That's amazing for a 1958 song. It reminds me of Black Sabbath 10 years and more later.

Kinda amazing how many NAs there are throughout music. Most of those I have always seen as leading black rock or blues artists were in fact NAs.

New to me, but completely plausible:
Selling NA men abroad and importing mostly black men was the beginning of the merging of African and NA cultures and music, as some 85% of blacks had some NA blood.

Ain't immigration cool.
Thanks to the Slavers for our diversity and to our diversity for rubbing salt in the slavers wounds of their false sense of superiority.

Top 10 in 1958. Easy to see why Rumble didn't make it that year. But yeah, if that had been included on Black Sabbath "Paranoid" album (1970) it would have fit right in.

Volare - Domenico Modugno.
All I Have To Do Is Dream / Claudette - Everly Brothers.
Don't / I Beg of You - Elvis Presley.
Witch Doctor - David Seville.
Patricia - Pérez Prado.
Sail Along Silvery Moon / Raunchy - Billy Vaughn.
Catch a Falling Star / Magic Moments - Perry Como.

So when I bought Elton John tickets for Petco Park back in May, nobody said we'd be having close to record low temps and a stiff wind, but it was definitely worth it. We had great seats, not that people stayed seated all that much, and the flash, glitz, and performance was everything you'd hope for out of Elton John - much better than one might think, given his age.

He fired up the crowd with "Bennie and the Jets", and played for over two hours. Set list here:

Bennie and the Jets

Philadelphia Freedom

I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues

Border Song

Tiny Dancer

Have Mercy on the Criminal

Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)

Take Me to the Pilot

Someone Saved My Life Tonight

Levon

Candle in the Wind

Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

Burn Down the Mission

Sad Songs (Say So Much)

Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word

Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

The Bitch Is Back

I'm Still Standing

Crocodile Rock

Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting

Encore:
Cold Heart

Your Song

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

My favorite Elton John album is Tumbleweed Connection. The song Burn Down The Mission is on that record. But every song on that record is great.

Yeah, I remember that one. Couldn't argue with it being one of the best.
