Hadn't seen that in years.

Was that Ron Burgundy at about the 30 second mark?
You think you're joking?
AI Summary

To understand the connection between Arthur C. Bartner and Ron Burgundy, consider these points:

Arthur C. Bartner is a real-life figure known for his work as a band director.
He served as the director of the USC Trojan Marching Band for several decades.
Bartner's flamboyant personality and style inspired the character Ron Burgundy, played by Will Ferrell.
Both share a love for showmanship and entertainment, particularly in a comedic context.
The character's over-the-top demeanor reflects Bartner's vibrant approach to music and performance.
Bartner's influence extends beyond film, impacting the culture of marching bands and sports events.
Also, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) is set in the 1970s.

Stevie Nicks celebrates with the USC band at the Coliseum.
At halftime of the 1980 homecoming game against Arizona State, members of Fleetwood Mac presented Bartner with a platinum album (1M sold), the first college marching band to get such an honor.
Nicks is wearing the official cardinal and gold colors. Bartner's jacket and the band uniforms would best be described as, you guess it, burgundy.

In case y'all ever DJ a funeral -

What song is inappropriate to play at a funeral?
AI Overview

Inappropriate funeral songs often have lyrics about death, the devil, or are overly celebratory, making them unsuitable for a somber occasion. Examples include "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen, "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC, and "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead". Other examples are songs like "Stayin' Alive," "Happy," and "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," due to their upbeat or thematically unfitting nature.

Songs about death or the afterlife

"Another One Bites the Dust": by Queen
"Highway to Hell": by AC/DC
"Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead": from The Wizard of Oz
"(Don't Fear) The Reaper": by Blue Öyster Cult
"Death on Two Legs": by Queen
"I'm Not Gonna Miss You": by Glen Campbell

Songs with a celebratory or dismissive tone

"Happy": by Pharrell Williams
"Best Day of My Life": by American Authors
"I Will Survive": by Gloria Gaynor
"Stayin' Alive": by Bee Gees
"It's Too Late To Apologize": by Timbaland ft. OneRepublic
"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life": by Monty Python

Songs with potentially offensive lyrics

"Fuck Off and Die": by Green Day
"She's a Bitch": by Missy Elliott
"I Don't Give a F*: "** by Tupac

:D

I want "Highway to Hell" and "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" played at my funeral.

So I was generally ignoring a set of commercials when a familiar tune caught my ear. Cheery little melody "H O T T O G O you can take me hot to go" and I looked up and saw a Target ad with a bunch of kittens running around. First thought: timing was a bit off to play "hot to go" and show cats, but then I wondered who in hell picked the Chappell Roan song for a family-type ad at Target and have they ever listened to the entire song? And did they understand they lyrics, including that the singer is trying to get another girl to take her home for errr fun and games?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncx5EJwyWMQ

Good song, reminiscent of the Go-Go's but hardly family-friendly.

F'rinstance:
Well, I woke up alone staring at my cеiling
I try not to care, but it hurts my feelings
You don't have to stare, comе here, get with it
No one's touched me there in a damn hot minute

[Refrain]
And baby, don't you like this beat?
I made it so you'd sleep with me
It's like a hundred ninety-nine degrees
When you're doing it with me, doing it with me

Perhaps even crazier than playing Chappell Roan in a Target ad is:
What was Keith Urban thinking? Sang LGBTQ anthem for Trump at Mar-a-Lago
The singer’s choice to perform Chappell Roan’s ‘Pink Pony Club’ for Trump and a billionaire Australian businessman at the president’s private Florida club has ignited lots of questions

... It emerged on social media over the weekend that Urban performed on Saturday night at a private party at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s Florida resort. Trump was seen at the party, seated next to its host, Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt, according to video posted by a Florida-based realtor and others.

But, curiously, the singer chose to perform an acoustic cover of Chappell Roan’s gay bar-themed hit “Pink Pony Club,” widely considered to be an LGBTQ anthem because it describes a young woman who finds self-acceptance in a place where she feels free from her strict upbringing....

People magazine reported that Urban also performed Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” for Trump, Pratt and the other party-goers. People magazine also said that Urban has performed “Pink Pony Club” during his recent concerts and that the singer said that he “almost cried” when he first heard the song.

“Who doesn’t wanna find a safe place, wherever that is?” Urban said, according to People. “You just wanna find your people — doesn’t matter what that is, just somewhere where you finally realize you belong there.” ...
:happy-cheerleaderkid:

Is Keith Urban Republican? Singer sparks liberal fury over Mar-a-Lago visit

Summary: -0-? Who knows?

I'm not furious. Music is for everyone. It wasn't a campaign event. Urban played what he wanted to. The country is talking about the "LGBTQ anthem" played at Mar-a-Lardo, and I'm sure Urban and his band got a hefty payday. All fine with me.

Chappell Roan - Pink Pony Club (Live From The 67th Grammy Awards)
:-|| That's a lot of staging for a single song.

Words sung at Mar-Lardo:
I know you wanted me to stay
But I can't ignore the crazy visions of me in L.A.
And I heard that there's a special place
Where boys and girls can all be queens every single day

[Refrain]
I'm having wicked dreams of leaving Tennessee
Hear Santa Monica, I swear it's calling me
Won't make my mama proud, it's gonna cause a scene
She sees her baby girl, I know she's gonna scream

[Pre-Chorus]
"God, what have you done?
You're a pink pony girl, and you dance at the club," oh mama
I'm just having fun
On the stage in my heels, it's where I belong, down at the

[Chorus]

Yup.
White House mocks Sabrina Carpenter with her own lyrics after ICE video criticism
Pop star rebuked the government over her song being used in a montage of people being chased and arrested by ICE agents

The White House has issued a pun-filled response to Sabrina Carpenter after the pop star criticised the Trump administration for using one of her songs in a video promoting its deportation efforts....

A spokesperson said in a statement to The Independent: “Here’s a Short’n’Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won’t apologise for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?”
... It comes one month after US pop singer Olivia Rodrigo lambasted the Trump administration after the Department of Homeland Security posted an Instagram video soundtracked by her “All-American B****” to promote its deportation efforts.

In the comments, Rodrigo wrote: “Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” ...

After Rodrigo’s response went viral, Instagram removed the soundtrack from the clip. An error message reading “This song is currently unavailable” is currently displayed.

... Carpenter and Rodrigo have joined a growing list of artists who have objected to Trump or his administration for using their music without consent, including Jack White, Beyoncé and the Rolling Stones.
:---P Heroes.

White House responds to Sabrina Carpenter calling out use of 'Juno' in ICE raids video: 'Must be stupid'
The Grammy winner becomes the latest singer to slam the White House for using their music in videos celebrating ICE on social media.

... This is the latest in a string of occurrences in which President Donald Trump's administration co-opts viral songs to feature in videos praising Trump or celebrating the results of his policies on social media.

Most recently, the White House featured the music of Carpenter's friend and collaborator Taylor Swift in a patriotic TikTok video celebrating Trump — despite his numerous social media posts bashing the pop star. While Swift made no comment against the video, other musicians have not kept quiet in the same situation.

Kenny Loggins made headlines in October for demanding the removal of the unauthorized use of his song "Danger Zone" in an AI-generated video of Trump wearing a crown and flying in a jet labeled "King Trump." The release of the video, which showed the jet dumping a brown substance appearing to be feces on a crowd of protesters, coincided with the nationwide No Kings protests against the Trump administration's policies.

"Nobody asked me for my permission, which I would have denied, and I request that my recording on this video is removed immediately,'" Loggins said in an official statement on his website. "I can’t imagine why anybody would want their music used or associated with something created with the sole purpose of dividing us... We're in this together, and it is my hope that we can embrace music as a way of celebrating and uniting each and every one of us."

Other artists who have spoken out against Trump for using their music include Pharrell, Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Adele, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Neil Young, Rihanna, Ozzy Osbourne, Nickelback, Linkin Park, the Rolling Stones, Village People, Panic! at the Disco, Queen, R.E.M, and the estates and families of Tom Petty, Laura Branigan, Prince, and George Harrison.
:---P More heroes.
Still, Trump has continued to play many of their songs over the artists' objections at his events.
Thief, slacker.
Jess Glynne slams White House for using her viral Jet2 Holiday song in ICE deportation meme: 'Makes me sick'
“My music is about love, unity and spreading positivity," said the "Hold My Hand" singer.

... The White House ad comes weeks after Trump signed off on his "Big Beautiful Bill," authorizing $170 billion in spending on border and immigration enforcement. The cash infusion makes ICE the highest-funded law enforcement agency in the federal government.
... In March, rock band Semisonic similarly criticized the White House and Border Patrol’s joint post of a man in handcuffs, accompanied by their song "Closing Time." The video was captioned, "You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here."

In a statement shared on social media, the band wrote, "We did not authorize or condone the White House’s use of our song 'Closing Time' in any way. And no, they didn’t ask. The song is about joy and possibilities and hope, and they have missed the point entirely."

Aside from Glynne and Semisonic, Queen, Nickelback, Rihanna, R.E.M., Steven Tyler, the Village People, the estate of Tom Petty, and many more have called for Trump to stop using their songs at his rallies and other events. Neil Young went as far as taking legal action.
:---P Some additional heroes in that list. The WH sure has a busy team of rude folks co-opting performers from multiple genres. Assholes.

Originally by Hole (1998).
Covered by Chromatics in 2019.
Cover featured on the soundtrack of The Perfection (2018).
However, the video is from the 2005 Italian film Melissa P.. Idk whether there's any association between the 1998 song and 2005 film besides this YT post.

I followed the algorithm down a rabbit hole of 80's music last night. Reminded me of what a different world we have now, and also that given what we have now, I'd gladly welcome Reagan and Thatcher back. That's scary.
