The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Good point, but what's called 'Retro' changes over time. Now, everything from the "late nineteen hundreds" is included and we're inching into the early 2000s. :problem:

Afroman had his house raided by police, so he made songs about it. Police officers sued him. He just won. Had he never been sued most people would never know about these songs. Streisand effect and all.

Speaking of old, the YT algorithm did me a solid:

Olivia Rodrigo - "You’re So Vain" (Carly Simon) | 2022 (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) Induction
16M views

:-|| :-|| for Olivia and Carly!!
She was just 19 years old and delivered a performance like that. Superb.
Carly was 29 when the song came out. Good on the HoF producer that first thought of Olivia to sing Carly's biggest hit.
This is definitely on the low end of Olivias range… and she killed it
Her stage presence is fucking insane. This young lady bosses a stage, and a crowd, so well.
Olivia's going to be a HUGE superstar in a few years, her vocals have improved SO MUCH and she's killing it. Rooting for her.
Now 23, Wiki:
... Rodrigo has earned three Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, two US Billboard 200 number-one albums, and eight songs with multi-platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Her accolades include three Grammy Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, and seven Billboard Music Awards. She was recognized as Time's Entertainer of the Year in 2021, Billboard's Woman of the Year in 2022, and twice as ASCAP's Pop Music Songwriter of the Year in 2022 and 2024.
Back to the YT comments:
This girl's rendition is FANTASTIC ❤❤❤
Let's give it up to Olivia Rodrigo who sang as beautifully as the original artist, who didn't try to "stylize" or modify the vocals, but omg gave it up to the true and the wonder of Carly Simon. Hats off to this incredible singer!!!!
LONG time Carly fan. She SO richly deserved this. Although I really wanted Carly to perform (she was in mourning for the loss of her sisters who died one day apart), I was absolutely thrilled with Olivia's performance. I'm sure Carly was impressed as well.
Wiki again:
... Simon underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer between 1997 and 1998....

In October 2016, Simon donated the rights to "You're So Vain" for use in an anti-Donald Trump political attack ad. Simon had long chosen to keep her political views private and had never allowed "You're So Vain" to be used for political purposes in the past. As a reason for changing that, Simon cited the recently released Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump can be heard bragging on a hot mic about his behavior towards married women that commentators and lawyers have described as sexual assault. Simultaneously, Simon announced her opposition to Trump's candidacy in the upcoming 2016 U.S. presidential election. Simon cited the tape as what motivated her for the first time in her career to publicly take a political stance.
Simon's brother, Peter Simon, died from lung cancer on November 18, 2018. Peter Simon was 71 years old. In October 2022, Simon lost both of her sisters to cancer within a day of each other. Joanna Simon died on October 19, 2022, from thyroid cancer and Lucy Simon died the next day on October 20, 2022, from metastatic breast cancer. Joanna Simon was 85 years old and Lucy Simon was 82 years old.
Carly is 82 years old. Back to the YT comments:
For over months this performance has been in autoplay in our house everyday. My mother who never hear Olivia before instantly fall in love with her voice when she hear this. This has been an epic performance of Olivia for me.
Gen X here, from a time of truly great music and legendary singer-songwriters. I’ve rarely been impressed by artists from this generation, mostly because of heavy auto-tune use. That changed a few days ago when a Carly Simon song came across my feed, performed by Olivia. She has undeniable talent and presence. She’s exactly the kind of genuine singer-songwriter this generation needs. I'm a new, older fan!
i love how theatrical olivia is in her performances, you can tell she really cares about the song and feels deeply and isn’t just going through the motions. also my heart skipped a beat every time they showed brandi (Carlyle) singing along
 They also did several cutaways to LL Cool J.
I dig that she was laughing during the line "you're where you should be all the time, and when you're not, you're with some underground spy or the wife of a close friend, the wife of a close friend" as I think that's one of the best burns of an ex in music - in that he's probably incapable of recognizing it as an insult specifically because what she's saying is true. That's a line that deserves to be enjoyed!
Wow, just realizing how much this sounds like something Olivia would write. What an iconic song, clearly still influencing the culture (because toxic exes are timeless)
:)
Holy fucking shit. Didn’t know Olivia had this in her bag. A demolition of a performance (in a good way).
The band musicians, back up vocalists, Jim Ryan and Olivia Rodrigo made this performance an epic one. I can’t stop listening to it again and again and again. I need help 😄
Probably Jimmy Ryan (musician). Wiki:
... He has collaborated with artists such as Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, Cat Stevens, Elton John, and Rod Stewart....

Did not know all that about Carly and her family. 😟

I really don't get the Olivia love. It was an ok performance but not seeing the superlatives. Her voice is average + but not exceptional.

Plus the garter thing on a nineteen year old was a little uncomfortable for me.

"No accounting for taste." ;) The HoF producers felt differently.

You prefer tattoos? :P It's just a stage persona, one that has been very successful and lucrative for her.

:laughing-rolling:
... During the week of his the four-day period leading up to his trial (Mar. 13-16), Afroman’s discography earned 1.12 million official on-demand U.S. streams and just over 100 U.S. digital downloads. In the four-day period following the verdict (Mar. 20-23), those figures jumped 511% to 6.8 million official streams, and 2,113% to over 2,500 paid digital downloads. The buzziest track is “Lemon Pound Cake,” in which Afroman jeers at one deputy for apparently eyeing a cake on his counter. That song jumped 9,353% to 2.12 million official on-demand U.S. streams following the verdict (Mar. 20-23), and leapt a whopping 126,300% to over 1,200 U.S. digital downloads.
The streaming love isn’t exclusive to Afroman’s raid-related joints. His signature hit, the Grammy-nominated “High,” earned over 600,000 official on-demand U.S. streams on the Friday following the verdict (Mar. 20), up 133%.

Lemon Pound Cake, the album that compiles Afroman’s police disses, has already hit No. 8 on Billboard‘s Comedy Albums chart (dated Mar. 28), and bigger gains could very well be in store.

So I was generally ignoring a set of commercials when a familiar tune caught my ear. Cheery little melody "H O T T O G O you can take me hot to go" and I looked up and saw a Target ad with a bunch of kittens running around. First thought: timing was a bit off to play "hot to go" and show cats, but then I wondered who in hell picked the Chappell Roan song for a family-type ad at Target and have they ever listened to the entire song? And did they understand they lyrics, including that the singer is trying to get another girl to take her home for errr fun and games?

NASA drops Artemis II moon mission playlist. These are the astronauts' wake-up songs.

... "You asked for it. Here it is," NASA wrote Wednesday on social media, sharing the list via Spotify. "Each track was selected by the Moon crew, continuing a tradition that started more than 50 years ago. Stay tuned to find out which songs they'll choose next."
-0-? TV news says they were chosen by the astronauts' families.
The list includes:

"Sleepyhead" by Young & Sick
"Green Light (feat. André 3000)" by John Legend and André 3000
"In a Daydream" by Freddy Jones Band
"Pink Pony Club" by Chappell Roan
"Working Class Heroes (Work)" by CeeLo Green
"Good Morning" by Mandisa and TobyMac
"Tokyo Drifting" by Glass Animals and Denzel Curry
"Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie
"Lonesome Drifter" by Charley Crockett

"Pink Pony Club" ... describes the story of a woman moving to Southern California from her home residence of Tennessee, taking a job as a dancer in a gay club in West Hollywood despite her mother's wishes.

... A music video for "Pink Pony Club" accompanied its release in April 2020, featuring cameo appearances from drag queens Victoria "Porkchop" Parker and Meatball....

Chappell Roan was inspired to write "Pink Pony Club" after visiting the Abbey, a gay bar in West Hollywood, California, in 2018. Roan, who had recently moved from her hometown of Springfield, Missouri, stated that visiting the bar was "the first time I could truly be myself and not be judged". At the bar, she became enthralled with the performing go-go dancers, stating that seeing them "sparked [something] in me... I want[ed] to be a go-go dancer. So I just wrote a song about it." According to Roan, she had previously struggled with accepting herself in Springfield, stating in Headliner, "I always had such a hard time being myself and felt like I'd be judged for being different or being creative", adding that the bar was "something that I couldn't really have experienced here in Missouri... It was completely eye opening and changed my direction from that point on....
