TV news says the tariffs are really hitting the cost of costumes. Thanks, MAGA.

Did you ever wonder what you'd have done during the rise of fascism? You're doing it right now.

Katie Porter (D-Calif.) wore a Batgirl Halloween costume to work
“Taking my work in Congress seriously doesn’t mean I take *myself* too seriously,” she wrote.
“To my kids Luke, Paul, and Betsy, I’m still just Mom—seeing the Bat Signal on Halloween & putting on a goofy costume come with the territory,” the freshman lawmaker added.

The ‘TrumpKennedyCenter.org’ website is taken. This comedian owns it.

Re: Just for Fun
So today is Mardi Gras, and it's been a long time since I went to one in New Orleans, but I usually check out one of the live cams like this one from Bourbon Street - https://www.earthcam.com/usa/louisiana/ ... rbonstreet
I notice that there is very little costume/mask wearing anymore. Turns out about the only masks now are in the official parades, where masks are a legal requirement to ride. The rest of the time, it's illegal to wear a costume mask in Louisiana except on Mardi Gras, so most people going don't bother to dress anymore. Too bad. Now they could all just be wondering around drunk on any other sleazy street in the country. There was some issue with beads a few years ago too - clogging the sewers. But there still are beads. Some are tossing them even without any flashing too. Kinda going through the motions, it seems to me. Back when I was going I garon-tee there was partying you couldn't get anywhere else.

Best to stay out of NOLA for Mardi Gras. When I lived in MS I found Thibodaux and Mamou as better options. Fun and much safer.

It's been at least 30 years or more since I was at Mardi Gras - at least in part because I found JazzFest to be more fun. And once you've been to (the Real) Mardi Gras, then Carnival in a smaller place is probably better. But New Orleans Mardi Gras should be experienced at least once.supesalemgr2 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 6:16 amBest to stay out of NOLA for Mardi Gras. I keep seeing articles about "Don't go to (tourist attraction) - Go here instead". The list usually includes places that may be crowded, overpriced, not the same as in the past, etc. But I think there's something about seeing an original, a real place/thing/experience even if later you choose a substitute. One example almost always on those lists is Times Square. Sure it's not what it once was and is now pretty much a Disney version of its old self, but it's still one of the most famous places in the world - with a long and interesting history. Otherwise, it's like going to a tribute band concert instead of the original. Good show maybe, but not the same.

Surprisingly, NOLA started down when Carlos Marcello and his boys lost control of the city. Keeping the city safe was good for their "businesses".O Really wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 10:32 amIt's been at least 30 years or more since I was at Mardi Gras - at least in part because I found JazzFest to be more fun.
