The LEO thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Didn't somebody already note that "“plainly audible” from at least 25 feet away" leaves a lot of cop discretion and certainly hip-hop/rap is more likely to be "plainly audible" than country?
That's why I said, Presenting Florida's newest pretext law
Police prepare to enforce Florida’s new loud music law

One can make a strong case that country isn't really music. Others might say the same thing about hip-hop/rap.
It's all covered if it's "sound"

"It is unlawful for any person operating or occupying a motor vehicle on a street or highway to operate or amplify the sound produced by a radio, tape player, or other mechanical soundmaking device or instrument from within the motor vehicle so that the sound is:
(a) Plainly audible at a distance of 25 feet or more from the motor vehicle; or
(b) Louder than necessary for the convenient hearing by persons inside the vehicle in areas adjoining churches, schools, or hospitals.
(2) The provisions of this section shall not apply to any law enforcement motor vehicle equipped with any communication device necessary in the performance of law enforcement duties or to any emergency vehicle equipped with any communication device necessary in the performance of any emergency procedures.
(3) The provisions of this section do not apply to motor vehicles used for business or political purposes, which in the normal course of conducting such business use soundmaking devices."

Pigs gotta be pigs.

"On Monday night, the NYPD held private parties for officers and their guests at multiple locations along the waterfront in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Even as public spectators were turned away from popular viewing sites due to a lack of space, the police-only areas remained off limits to those unaffiliated with law enforcement.

John Miller, a department spokesperson, defended the “informal practice,” which he said was meant to accommodate police family members “who are regularly called upon to make sacrifices for the city when their spouses miss major holidays because they are working.”

But some firework fans and public officials were less forgiving, accusing the department of treating premium park space as a perk of the job."

Gotta love those First time evers

"After police officers from McKinney, Texas, surrounded and assaulted Vicki Baker’s house to subdue a dangerous fugitive who had barricaded himself inside, the city refused to pay for any of the damage. That forced Vicki—a retiree and cancer survivor—to exhaust her retirement savings, even though she had done nothing wrong.

But last month, in a landmark constitutional victory, a federal jury found that McKinney must compensate Vicki nearly $60,000. Incredibly, that marked the first time a federal court had ever ruled that the Fifth Amendment requires the government to compensate innocent owners who had their property destroyed by law enforcement."

Scientists reanimate dead cells in pigs, a potential breakthrough for organ transplants

New research is confounding conventional wisdom about life and death.

Researchers at Yale University used a new technology to restore cells in some organs of pigs that had just died, bringing the animals’ cells back to function. The findings, which were published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, raise profound ethical questions about how medicine defines death but also teases new possibilities for the collection of human organs for transplant....
The silly part of my brain immediately thinks of the whole zombie scenario. Legit concern though is organ theft and doctors only prioritizing the care of patients that can afford to keep paying millions for replacement organs while everyone else gets the bare minimum, is sent home to die and their organs are harvested to be kept in storage for the wealthy.

Garland is trying very hard to get you to like him. ;)
Justice Department charges 4 Louisville police officers in Breonna Taylor case

... Attorney General Merrick Garland said that civil rights offenses, including a falsified search warrant, led to the killing of the 26-year-old Black woman and emergency room technician in Louisville, Ky.

“We share but we cannot imagine the grief felt by Breonna Taylor’s loved ones and all of those affected by the events of March 13, 2020,” Garland said. “Breonna Taylor should be alive today.”

Former officers Joshua Jaynes and Kelly Goodlett, along with current Sgt. Kyle Meany, were charged with using false information to obtain the search warrant. A fourth officer, former Louisville cop Brett Hankison, was charged with using excessive force. According to Reuters, all four officers were arrested on Thursday.

“The federal charges announced today that members of the Place-Based Investigations unit falsified the affidavit used to obtain the search warrant of Ms. Taylor’s home,” Garland said at a morning press conference. “That this act violated federal civil rights laws and that those violations resulted in Ms. Taylor’s death.”

Garland alleged that Taylor’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated when three of the officers obtained the warrant knowing they lacked probable cause, understanding it contained false information and omitted other information. He claimed that the defendants knew that allegations of drug trafficking occurring at Taylor’s address were not true and that the warrant would be executed by armed officers.

According to Garland, the officers who executed the search warrant were not involved in obtaining it and were not aware it had false information. Garland said the officers involved with obtaining the warrant created false documents and conspired to lie to investigators in the aftermath of Taylor’s death.

“We allege that the defendants knew their actions and falsifying the affidavit could create a dangerous situation, and we allege these unlawful acts resulted in Ms. Taylor’s death,” Garland said. “The charges announced today also allege that the officers responsible for falsifying the affidavit that led to the search took steps to cover up their unlawful conduct after Ms. Taylor was killed.
How many filthy lying cops have never been caught? 1312.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said that other investigations into the death were still ongoing. Hankison, a former Louisville Metro Police officer who fired 10 shots through a window and sliding glass door during the raid on Taylor's home, was acquitted in March on state charges of endangering Taylor’s neighbors with his actions that night.

The officers were looking for a drug suspect who lived 10 miles away and was already in police custody. During the execution of the “no-knock” warrant, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired one shot, to which more than 20 rounds were returned, striking and killing Taylor. Her death, combined with other killings such as those of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, helped lead to the wave of social justice protests during the summer of 2020.

Ben Crump, the civil rights attorney who has been representing Taylor's family, issued a statement calling the charges "a huge step toward justice.”

"On behalf of Breonna's family, thank you to all who have continued to say her name, continued to pray, continued to fight, and continued to shut down all of the hate, negativity, and lies,” Crump said. “There have been so many dark days, so many times when hope was lost. We cannot emphasize enough how pivotal your voices and support have been to keep us going."

Vanessa Bryant donating settlement to charity

The model was awarded damages earlier this week after a jury found the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) and Fire Department (LAFD) had caused emotional distress by sharing photos from the fatal helicopter crash in January 2020 which killed her husband, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, and their daughter Gianna, while her co-plaintiff Chris Chester - whose wife Sarah and 13-year-old daughter Payton also died in the accident - was handed $15 million.

And now, Vanessa's attorney, Luis Li, has confirmed she will be donating the money to the Mamba and Mambacita Foundation because she hadn't taken action for financial gain.

Luis said in a statement: "From the beginning, Vanessa Bryant has sought only accountability, but our legal system does not permit her to force better policies, more training or officer discipline....

The jury took just a few hours to return their verdict on Wednesday (24.08.22) and afterwards, the county's lawyers insisted they "disagreed" with the findings....
 I hope they got as much justice as possible from this. It was good to see the abusive cops and firefighter forced to testify.

Wow - this is one crazy sheriff
They're everywhere, even in liberal Massachusetts.
District Attorney To Review All Cases Handled By Cop Who Planned Charlottesville Nazi Rally
The review is the result of a HuffPost exposé about Massachusetts officer John Donnelly's ties to the deadly rally and racist messages he posted online.

A Massachusetts prosecutor has promised to review all cases handled by police Officer John Donnelly after a HuffPost report exposed Donnelly’s role in planning the deadly 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Middlesex County District Attorney Marina Ryan announced Friday that her office is now “thoroughly reviewing any pending or closed cases” in which Donnelly, a patrolman in Woburn, Massachusetts, was involved....
This will cost the taxpayers tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.
On Thursday, HuffPost published a report detailing how Donnelly, 33, was among hundreds of white supremacists who descended on Charlottesville in August 2017 for a “Unite the Right” rally, terrorizing the town while chanting slogans such as “Jews will not replace us” and violently attacking counterprotesters. The bloody weekend culminated with a neo-Nazi driving his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

Donnelly attended the rally as a bodyguard for Richard Spencer, a prominent white supremacist. Leaked chat logs from a neo-Nazi Discord server show Donnelly played an integral part in planning the weekend’s events.

The messages Donnelly posted on Discord show he may have belonged to the white supremacist group Identity Evropa. His messages were also full of racist and antisemitic slurs, and at times they advocated violence against leftists and minorities.

After attending the Charlottesville rally, Donnelly returned to Woburn, where he continued to be a police officer for the next five years.

HuffPost’s report was based on research by a collective of antifascist researchers called Ignite the Right.
:-|| :-|| :-||
“We are acutely aware of the way in which these allegations tear at the fabric of trust which exists between communities and the police departments which serve them,” District Attorney Ryan said in her statement....

The New England Innocence Project, a civil rights group dedicated to preventing and correcting wrongful convictions, called on the district attorney to go further than just reviewing Donnelly’s cases.

“Every case this officer touched should be dismissed, every conviction vacated,” the group said in a statement on Twitter. “There is no integrity in a system that relies on his credibility, judgment, or fairness. Nothing he has said or done in the job can be sufficient to bring criminal consequences to someone else.”
Doing so preemptively, or as a result of individual or class action lawsuits brought by the "convicts" will cost even more in money, and will cost society when the guilty are freed. This will be balanced somewhat by the benefit to society of freeing those wrongly convicted with the help of the traitorous bigot.
Donnelly, the New England Innocence Project added, is likely a sign of a more systemic problem in the Woburn Police Department.

“This white supremacist officer had partners, supervisors, & trainers,” the group said. “If he made arrests, prosecutors and judges relied on his reports and testimony. Yet, NONE of these people recognized and exposed him; they enabled him to be in a position of power over our community.”

In anticipation of HuffPost’s report on Thursday, the Woburn Police Department suspended Donnelly pending an investigation.

“The Charlottesville rally is a dark moment in our history, and deeply disturbing,” Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin said in a statement. “The City of Woburn is taking these allegations seriously by investigating the incident thoroughly, and I will move to terminate Officer Donnelly if the investigation concludes that the allegations are accurate.”

Donnelly was not only a cop; he was also the president of a “back the blue” nonprofit called Irish Angel, which raised money for law enforcement causes. He was an award-winning real estate agent in the Boston area.

Irish Angel told HuffPost on Thursday that Donnelly had been removed as president of the organization.

Century 21, the real estate agency for which Donnelly worked, confirmed on Friday that Donnelly had been fired.

Surprisingly little coverage here. Final tally:
Victims

A total of 36 people were killed, including at least 24 children. The ages of the victims ranged between 3 and 69 years. A further 10 were injured. The provincial police investigation unit commented that most of the fatalities were from the combined results of gunshot and knife wounds....
 Hmm . . .
Perpetrator

The perpetrator was identified by police as 34-year-old Panya Khamrab ... His career in the police force began in 2012 ... he displayed violent behavior. He had his weapon seized when he fired at stray animals in the presence of colleagues.

Khamrab had been a drug addict since high school; in January 2022, he had been arrested for possessing methamphetamine. At the same time, he was treated for mental illness. He was dismissed from the police force in either 2021 or June 2022 as a result of his addiction.... plagued by marital and financial troubles. He was separated from his wife. Colleagues recalled Khamrab experiencing mood swings and said that he was not well-liked. He had allegedly threatened a bank manager with a pistol after being found sleeping instead of carrying out guard duties at the bank. He also argued with his wife over a suspected affair, and with a neighbour after holding disruptive house parties....

Khamrab legally purchased the 9mm pistol used in the attack.
 Just like America. It takes a lot to disqualify gunhugging. Also:
Initial investigations did not find any drugs in his body in the 72 hours before the attack.
