The LEO thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

He's lucky and admitted it.

He could afford to.
 I think former FBI agents in good standing can get a job anywhere, including private security for more money. Working for years in the Ka$h FBI will tarnish them forever.

 So that makes it Buncombe, Henderson, Polk, Madison, and Swain. I think there's 100 counties in NC, so we see that 5% of counties in NC are corrupt to one degree or another. I don't remember too much about the Madison County thing....it was something about the former sheriff who became a state ABC head did something wrong about money or something.
Could be that WNC is special. Idk about the rest of the state. There's the Upstate, too. Wright (R) is wrong!

Dozens of ethics charges filed against former Spartanburg Co. Sheriff Chuck Wright

65 charges! He's trying to compete with WNC all by himself.

Non-extradition country. :o

Jurors convict Illinois deputy of killing Sonya Massey but can't agree on first-degree murder charge

Second-degree murder seems reasonable to me, but probation will be really annoying.

This was on my yahoo news page this morning.

Sheriff Wright to plead guilty. Maybe we can expect a contiguous corrupt sheriff territory from the TN border to the coast of SC.

... Wright will be at least the 12th sheriff in South Carolina to be convicted or plead guilty to on-duty crimes in the past 15 years for misconduct ranging from extorting drug dealers to having inmates work at their homes to hiring a woman and then pressuring her to have sex....
 I think that tops NC! :-||

I saw the father (I think) on TV whining about the second degree conviction. I felt like reaching through the screen and grabbing his shirt, shaking him harshly and yelling "you idiot - do you realize how rare it is to convict a cop of anything for shooting somebody? Take the win, thank the prosecution, and go honor your daughter."

 George Floyd unwittingly sacrificed himself so that there would be more of these convictions. He broke the stranglehold cops had on knee-jerk public affection and support.

Michigan says, "Appalachia, hold my beer."
Funny. I don't know anything about these particular people, but Michigan does have an interesting phenomenon. Back in the 40's or so, a very large number of people migrated from Appalachia and Oklahoma to work in the car factories. For whatever reason(s), most of these people did not ever blend in and maintain pockets of hard core Appalachia to the present time. Largely around Detroit and the car building areas, there are other places in Michigan keeping this culture.
F'rinstance:
Beyond the urban centers, some rural areas of Michigan, particularly in the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, are also anecdotally associated with a rugged, self-reliant "hillbilly" or "redneck" culture, though these communities often identify with the local "Yooper" identity.
"Wexford County is a county in the Northern Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 33,673. The seat of Wexford County is Cadillac, which is also the county's largest city."

I guess the "hillbilly" culture must be a dominant gene or something. There are also pockets in California created by the people who came West with the Joads where a couple of generations later they still sound like Okies. Particularly around Bakersfield (home to the sounds of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, et. al.) Don't know if there's any correlation, but Bakersfield is also toward the bottom in most measures - education, income, and toward the top in violent crimes. Chances of getting mugged by some yahoo are pretty good if you're in the wrong part of town.

So I see that the Carlsbad police are setting up a "DUI Checkpoint" somewhere in the town tonight. Doesn't bother me, because we're not going to be out driving or drinking tonight, but I found an interesting and somewhat astounding factoid in the article:

"Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license."

Now maybe that's not all that much in a place where a red light violation can be $500, but it seemed pretty incredible to me. That's first offender, and apparently no actual harm done (wreck, etc.), although I guess the more serious ones would be included in the average.

Now I suspect the $13,500 number either isn't accurate or, if it is, is highly distorted from the bigger ones. DMV says "Fines: $390-$1,000 (plus assessments, totaling much more).

Still, that's some big numbers for a traffic offence.

They tried that in Missoula. We had a crew all set to go with warning signs, but our scouts never found the checkpoint. Turns out that so many citizens had called to complain that the police cancelled it. I ran into one in Hooterville, middle of the day. I told the cop it was like being in Beirut. He seemed more shocked than pissed off. Good.

Yeah, I don't generally have a problem with checkpoints for DUI, but I've become just paranoid enough to think that ICE is somehow behind or associated with this. Maybe not in Carlsbad, as the local cops don't cooperate with ICE except as specifically and in detail required by law and sometimes not then, but I could certainly easily see a situation where ICE could stand around at the checkpoint jumping on Brown people.

Carlsbad position:
Carlsbad, as part of San Diego County, follows the county's policy to limit local law enforcement cooperation with ICE, primarily by restricting assistance for federal immigration enforcement unless a judicial warrant is present, a stance reinforced by California's TRUST Act and county ordinances like the "CLEAR" proposal, aiming to build community trust and protect immigrant residents.

On a somewhat related issue - throughout our travels, maintained a private post office address. You use the address they assign you and your mail goes there. You can see online what you get and instruct them to shred, store, or send to wherever you are. To use these, you have to fill out a PO form 1583, and get your signature notarized. Well, I can't tell that the requirement nor the process has been changed but for some reason the Postal Service wants (requires) everybody to renew, i.e., complete new forms. I can't help thinking it's another attempt at ICE dirty tricks.

Checkpoints for "DUI" (really also lic, reg, insurance, obvious equipment issues, active pot smoking, visible illegalities, fugitives, etc) are a police intrusion upon all of us without probable cause, and as you note they are a slippery slope for things like ICE checkpoints.

Meanwhile, a FL sheriff just stomped the shitty little Kyle Rittenhouse for lying about a supposed "stand your ground" killing in FL. The killer rode a tractor over a mile to the victim's house, began assaulting the victim's wife, the victim came out, unarmed, to assist his wife and the killer shot him dead. Watch your ass, Kyle.

... “I think both of you (Kyle and his attorney, Anthony Sabatini) are jokes, and I don’t think you should make a damn cent off the suffering of someone else,” he said. “So, if you don’t like that, well you can file that under I don’t really give a damn. I know people aren’t’ going to like this, and I don’t care about that either. I’m so disgusted and sad for the Keen family and their loss and the fact that these two yo-yos are going to try to make money and news on it. And I probably shouldn’t give them this, but I think the public deserves to know this doesn’t have a damn thing to do with the Second Amendment or Stand Your Ground. So, I hope that many of you will reach out and tell these two jack-wagons what you think about what they are doing to this family suffering....
