Jesus, the effing Dodgers.

I'm gonna have to start hating them.

"largest contract for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history ... 12 years, $375M."

Wait, Shohei Ohtani pitches (also DH) and his contract is potentially $700 million over 10-years. I think Jeff Passan needs to clarify his post.

EDIT: Here's a clarification:
Does MLB need a salary cap and revenue sharing? YES!

Smart move, too. She probably delayed any potential trade or cut of Joe by at least a year or two.

Has anyone ever heard of a mayor telling a major pro team to work it out at home rather than move to the mayor's city?

Las Vegas mayor says Athletics should pitch new plan to Bay Area

 The A's just can't get any respect. Then, there's this going on:
Teachers' union sues over public funding for A's stadium in Vegas

... Strong Public Schools Nevada, a political action committee backed by the Nevada State Education Association, filed a lawsuit Monday in state court in Carson City challenging the allocation of up to $380 million in public funding approved last June by the Democratic-led state Legislature and signed by the Republican governor.

"Every dollar we spend building stadiums is a dollar we aren't using for public education," the association said in a statement provided Tuesday by spokesperson Alexander Marks. "Public money should not go to a billionaire for a stadium while Nevada ranks 48th in the nation with the largest class sizes and highest educator vacancy rates in the country."

The $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof is planned near the homes of the NFL's Raiders, who relocated in 2020 from Oakland to Las Vegas, and the NHL's Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup last season in their sixth year.

The fight over the use of public funds in Las Vegas comes amid debate in other cities and states over the costs and benefits of taxpayer support for sports venues. Nevada state lawmakers in 2016 granted $750 million in public assistance toward the Raiders' nearly $2 billion Allegiant Stadium. T-Mobile Arena, home to the Golden Knights, opened with no public assistance....
 Sweet deal for the Raiders.

Well she said she'd welcome them if the come. I liked her interview and style, though. When they asked her who she thought would win the Super Bowl, she said "Las Vegas"

Betting this won't go well.

White Sox reportedly seeking $1 billion from Illinois to fund new stadium

IIRC, Reinsdorf threatened to move to Florida in the 90's without public funds. It's actually not a bad venue to catch a game but was antiquated right after opening and always locationally challenged. They made a lot of improvements but they have always been second class citizens in Chicago.

Earlier this month, the club unveiled its plans to move to the currently unoccupied 78 South Loop development near Clark Street and Roosevelt Road. The stadium would replace Guaranteed Rate Field, which was opened as Comiskey Park in 1991, the last field of the era before Camden Yards transformed the aesthetics of modern ballparks.

Does not bode well for the Padres to give up 8 runs in the first inning of spring training games and lose 14-1 to the hated Dodgers.

:) This might:
In the first half of the first inning of the first Spring Training game of 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers scored a whopping eight runs against the San Diego Padres.
... By the time Loewen got yanked, the Padres had only recorded one out. The Dodgers, on the other hand, had racked up eight runs.

Los Angeles was able to hang a snowman on San Diego without former MVPs Freddie Freeman or Shohei Ohtani. All-Stars Will Smith and Max Muncy did not start, either, nor did veteran outfielders Jason Heyward or Manuel Margot.
New phrase to me.
snowman

An 8-run inning as it appears on the scoreboard, like two large balls of snow stacked on top of one another.
 :---P
... FanGraphs is projecting Los Angeles to win 94.5 games in 2024 – the second most in baseball – following the club's $1.2 billion offseason. San Diego, meanwhile, is projected to win 81.3 games....
Exactly .500, ugh.
Cubs - also 81.3 wins, Win World Series 1.3%
Orioles - 84.1 :( , Win World Series 3.2%
Nationals - 65.3, Win World Series 0.0% :puke-left: :laughing-rolling:
Mariners - 85.3, Win World Series 4.1%
Padres - Win World Series 1.2%, ouch
Dodgers - Win World Series 16.7%

"$1.2 billion" :o :o :o

  I did forget, but in my defense they've been very forgettable for years.

IF you return to LNF you should lead with that

Last I saw, the A's might play in Sacramento this year.
"Sutter Health Park in Sacramento is the home of the Triple-A River Cats, a Giants affiliate, and can seat more than 14,000."

Way bigger than the A's need.

This year they'll still be in the rat trap. Beyond that? -0-?
It’s unclear whether the franchise will play its 2025 home games in Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco or a minor league stadium in Las Vegas.
