The car thread ...

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Speaking of Goats, I may have told this story before, ignore it if I have, but I had a frat brother whose father, Pete Estes, was president of Chevrolet at the time, having been promoted from president of Pontiac. Pete was largely responsible for development of the GTO, as well as the Camaro. Anyway, Bill (my bro) who ostensibly could have driven anything GM made, drove this modest generic-looking four-door Pontiac Tempest:

But the motor, suspension, gearing were all hopped up GTO-go.

Interesting article here about Pete, along with Bill. If it weren't for Pete, neoplacebo would be driving a Taurus.

I thought John DeLorean was the one who came out with the GTO
Not necessarily a contradiction.
The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was manufactured by American automaker Pontiac from 1963 to 1974 for the 1964 to 1974 model years ...

Origins

... In his autobiography Glory Days, Pontiac chief marketing manager Jim Wangers, who worked for the division's contract advertising and public relations agency, states that John DeLorean, Bill Collins, and Russ Gee were responsible for the GTO's creation....
Pete Estes was President of the Pontiac Division from 1961 until becoming President of the Chevrolet Division in 1965.

John DeLorean, formerly assistant to Pontiac chief engineer Pete Estes might have been made chief engineer when Estes was promoted to President of the Pontiac Division in 1961, but Wiki doesn't quite say so. Anyhow, DeLorean was promoted to head of the Pontiac division in 1965.
"At 40, DeLorean had broken the record for youngest division head at GM ... "

So, both were heavily involved. Wiki gives more credit to DeLorean, but that doesn't mean that O Really is wrong.

O Really may occasionally be wrong, but in this case I think it's just a matter of roles. Pete was president of Pontiac with a goal of getting past its stodgy image. DeLorean was the engineer. To what extent Pete participated in actual design, who knows, but he would have been the one to say "go with it" and would have been the one fired if it had been a bust.

Supposedly this car was rather unstable at high speed due to the rear engine.
The Porsche, you mean?
 No. I've always dreamed of having a 911.
Buy it. You're not getting any younger - they aren't getting any cheaper. Buy it today. Then take it on Tail of the Dragon. Stomp some motorcycles on the way up. Then take a road trip while it's still warm enough to keep the top down. Do it.

 Thanks for the good advice. And I didn't mean to suggest you were "wrong" about the GTO, just that I'd read somewhere in the past that DeLorean had been the driving force or some such thing. My grandfather had a Pontiac that had some sort of clear glass or other material on the front of the hood that represented an Indian's head. I think it might have even had a light in it.

Ah, yes.....granddad's car was a black one so the thing "honoring" Pontiac stood out even more.

Yeah, I say Pontiac missed their big chance by not putting his head on the Trans Am, either as the head of the chicken as a raised half dome with the tachometer on the side facing the windshield, or as another version of the historic Pontiac head at the front of stylized wings.

Doesn't cost much different in money or time to build a car both functional and creatively beautiful than to build one of those travesties. The VW/Porsche was pretty nice though.

Good for criminal getaways and/or surprise high speed pursuits?

I'm not sure that last monstrosity is even drivable - certainly not street legal. Could be just an attention-getter for the rims and tires business there. But why?

That blue Cadillac should either be put on the roof of the store or else only driven at night on ice. And I'm not likely to generate any offspring with Melania. Hell, most of the time I can't understand what the fuck she's saying. And for the record, I'm not a big fan of the new Camaro's looks. I've gotten a couple of compliments on my 99 just in the past month and I don't even go anywhere very far or very often.

Congrats. Your boy would be young, in SoFL and half Melania's. A Camaro is all you get, the modern trashiness is hers. :P

Why is it not surprising that a gold-plated Camaro would be parked in a crappy neighborhood.
